Abstract

The study assessed the impact of COVID-19 lock down on universities supervision and programme accreditation in the Nigerian universities using North east zone as case study. Survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study was made up of all the academic staff in the study area of North East Nigeria. Simple random sampling technique was employed to select 200 academic staffers in four public universities in the study area which was used as study sample. A self-developed questionnaire was designed called (Perception of Academic Staff on Impact of COVID-19 on universities supervision and programme accreditation Questionnaire” (PASIUSPAQ). The instrument was subjected to reliability test using the split- half estimated method to ascertain the internal consistency of the instrument. The reliability estimate for the subscale and the full test ranged from 0.59 to 0.76, which shows that they were valid. Data collected was analyzed by ANOVA. The result showed that COVID-19 lock down affected universities supervision in Nigeria. The result also revealed that COVID-19 lock down affected programme accreditation in Nigerian universities. Based on this findings, the study recommended adoption of e-supervision and e-programme accreditation by the respective institutions in charge of universities supervision and accreditation in Nigeria.

Abstract

This paper examined the problems that has militated against effective Guidance and Counseling service in the universities in Nigeria. Secondary data were used in the paper. The secondary data were gathered from print materials and online publications. The paper specifically stated that poor funding, inadequate Guidance and Counseling materials, shortage of trained Guidance and Counsellors, poor capacity building programme, negative attitude of university community and inadequate infrastructure facilities are problems that have hindered effective Guidance and Counselling services delivery in the universities in Nigeria. Based on these problems, the paper recommended that; Universities management should increase the budgetary allocation of Guidance and Counseling units in the various universities. Counselling materials like psychological tests, play gadget, tape recorder, log book, record folder, etc should be provided for the guidance and career development centres for effective service delivery. University authorities should employ more qualified/trained Guidance and Counsellors and post them to the Guidance and counseling units.

Abstract

One of the major problem facing Nigeria as Country is how to address the problem of out of school children. Every year the population of out of school children keeps increasing. It has been observed that Nigeria has the highest out of school children in the World. This paper examined the factors responsible for out of school children in Nigeria. Among other things, the paper discussed are; concept of out of school children, factors responsible for out of school children in Nigeria and the paper suggested the way forward.

Abstract

This paper examined the concept of out-of-school children in Nigeria, the factors responsible for out-of-school children, the social implications of out-of-school children and suggested way forward. Secondary data were used in the paper. The data were sourced from print and online publications. The paper identified causes of out-of-school children in Nigeria to include; poor funding of education, corruption, poor implementation of the Child Rights Act, insecurity problems, lack of political will to address the problems, high rate of poverty, and high fertility rate. The paper also concluded that the social implications of out-of-school children include security challenges, shortage of skilled manpower in future, bad international image, high levels of illiteracy and high socio-economic and dependency issues. The paper recommended among other things that the federal, state and local governments should come up with programmes to address the problem of out-of-school children in Nigeria. Also, adequate funding should be allocated to the education sector at all levels of government.
