Abstract

This research examines the resilience of soldiers' wives as a conceptual metaphor represented in the Indonesian films Merah Putih Memanggil and Sayap-Sayap Patah. The research employs a metaphorical framework to analyse how these films portray the emotional strength, perseverance, and sacrifices of soldiers' wives amidst the hardships they face. The metaphorical representation serves to highlight broader themes of loyalty, endurance, and the unseen struggles within military families. Through the analysis of narrative and visual elements, the study demonstrates how the wives' resilience mirrors the physical and psychological struggles of their husbands, thereby offering a more profound comprehension of their role that challenges conventional stereotypes. The films Merah Putih Memanggil and Sayap-Sayap Patah represent the emotional resilience of soldiers' wives through conceptual metaphors such as “a promise as an emotional contract,” “time as distance,” and “blanket and shroud,” which illustrate the tension between hope and the fear of loss, where these metaphors not only convey the wives’ psychological struggles but also highlight how Indonesian cinema is beginning to provide significant narrative space for women as subjects of emotional experience within military and nationalist contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the symbolic meaning of the sarong as a representation of santri identity at Ma’had Baitul Arqom Al Islami through a semantic approach. The sarong is understood not merely as traditional clothing, but as a cultural sign embedded with rich cultural, religious, and social meanings within pesantren life. Using the library research method, this study explores literature related to semantic theory, cultural symbols, and the construction of santri identity. The analysis shows that denotatively, the sarong functions as a piece of cloth to cover the body. However, connotatively, the sarong represents values of simplicity, equality, obedience, and Islamic piety—core principles in the life of a santri. The sarong also plays a crucial role in constructing collective identity within the pesantren, reinforcing the continuity of local values rooted in the Islamic tradition of the Nusantara. Thus, the meaning of the sarong reflects the integration between cultural expression and character formation within the traditional Islamic education system.

Abstract

Song lyrics represent cultural texts rich in emotional and symbolic meaning. This study employs qualitative content analysis using a frame semantics approach to analyze the lyrics of “Cinta Sejati Takkan Mati” by Agus Subianto (2025b), the original soundtrack of the film Believe (released in 2025), as an object of cognitive linguistic inquiry. The data consist of the complete lyrics of a single song, examined to explore the conceptual representation of the father figure of Indonesian culture. Drawing on frame semantics (Fillmore, 1982) and the principles of embodied cognition (Johnson, 2007), the analysis identifies five primary semantic frames: (1) Father as Eternal Love, (2) Father as Silent Sacrifice, (3) Father as Living Memory, (4) Father as Source of Validation, and (5) Father as Eternal Guardian. The findings reveal that the father is represented not merely as a biological figure, but as a multidimensional emotional and spiritual symbol that shapes the child’s identity through embodied affective experience. The song constructs paternal love as transcendent and immeasurable, reinforcing cultural narratives of the father as a moral and emotional anchor within the family. This study expands the application of cognitive linguistics in popular culture analysis and demonstrates how song lyrics function as cultural media that reflect and shape collective understandings of emotion, family relationships, and spirituality.
