Abstract

This study analyzes the "Marriage is Scary" trend and its impact on changing young people's perceptions of marriage. Marriage, previously regarded as a social obligation and a measure of success, is now seen as a personal choice dependent on mental, emotional, and financial readiness. Through social media interactions, this trend amplifies narratives of marital risks, such as household instability, divorce, and domestic violence. From the perspective of symbolic interactionism, symbols such as stories of domestic violence or divorce shape a new understanding of marriage as a decision requiring careful consideration. This trend reflects young people's priorities toward personal achievements, freedom, and life balance. The main impacts of this trend are increased awareness of the need for thorough preparation before marriage and the decision to delay or even avoid marriage. Ultimately, the "Marriage is Scary" trend contributes to cultural shifts, where marriage is no longer seen as a primary life goal but rather as one of the options for achieving personal happiness and success.
