Abstract

This study aims to analyze the operational effectiveness of the Ripple Mill machine using a TPM maintenance strategy approach by measuring OEE. The method used is descriptive quantitative, with primary data from observations and interviews, and secondary data from factory operational documentation. The evaluation was based on three leading OEE indicators: availability, performance, and quality. It was complemented by an analysis of the six significant losses to identify sources of lost production time. The results show that the average OEE value from January to March 2025 reached 96.53%, exceeding the international standard of ≥85%. The most significant losses came from equipment breakdowns (69.75%), followed by minor breakdowns and idling (18.48%). Preventive maintenance programs, operator training, and spare parts availability are recommended. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the TPM approach in continuously improving machine performance.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the feasibility of using 500-ton and 1000-ton Crude Palm Oil (CPO) storage tanks in a palm oil mill. The evaluation is based on the roundshell thickness, operating temperature, and hydrostatic pressure acting on the tanks. A descriptive quantitative method was applied using primary and secondary data from PMKS Simpang Gambir. The results showed that for the 500-ton tank, the calculated roundshell thickness is 8.6 mm, the actual is 8.87 mm, and the design is 9 mm, with a hydrostatic pressure of 5.73 Pa. For the 1000-ton tank, the calculated thickness is 13.1 mm, the actual thickness is 13.8 mm, and the design thickness is 14 mm, with a hydrostatic pressure of 11.46 Pa. The corrosion rates are 0.00072 mm/month and 0.0011 mm/month, respectively. Based on the analysis, the 500-ton tank is feasible for continued use for approximately 31 years, and the 1000-ton tank for 53 years, assuming constant corrosion rates.

Abstract

This study examines the optimization of the physical and sensory characteristics of Arabica and Robusta house blends from Sidamanik by comparing the performance of stainless steel and cast-iron roasting drums. The novelty of this research lies in mapping the influence of material heat retention on roasting profiles and flavor development in specific blend formulations. Using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD), the study tested four blend ratios (100:0, 75:25, 25:75, 0:100) and analyzed parameters including moisture content, defect values, roasting curves, and sensory evaluations via hedonic and cupping tests. The results indicate that cast iron possesses superior thermal stability, significantly accelerating the attainment of the first crack compared to stainless steel. Sensorially, a 100% Arabica formulation roasted in a cast-iron machine produced a superior profile dominated by fruity and sweet characteristics. Conversely, stainless steel was found to better balance flavor complexity in the 25% Arabica and 75% Robusta blend, yielding a harmonious profile of sweet, bitter, and salty notes. These findings underscore that the selection of roasting material must be aligned with the desired blend flavor profile. Consequently, cast iron is recommended for time efficiency and consistent physical quality, whereas stainless steel remains relevant for achieving flavor equilibrium in specific house-blend formulations.
