Abstract

Chinese characters are an important part of learning Chinese. Student"™s Chinese language proficiency depends on the teaching materials used in the learning process. Student"™s ability to recognize Chinese characters greatly affects their overall Chinese language proficiency. Since 2021, a new standard has been in effect, namely the "Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education". In this new standard, there are changes, namely increasing the number of test levels, expanding the scope of the test, and determining the number of Chinese characters that must be mastered at each level. The author used the library method and comparative analysis method to examine the arrangement and scope of Chinese characters in seven "Road to Success" textbooks, and analyzed and compared the Chinese characters in "Road to Success" based on the "Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education". The results of this study are that, from "Introduction" to "Progress 2", the arrangement of the number of Chinese characters in each section is relatively reasonable and the number of Chinese characters is steadily increasing. There is no significant increase or decrease in the number of Chinese characters and overall the arrangement is well organized. Then the analysis results are that the first level (basic) covering 52%, the second level (basic) covering 23%, the third level (basic) covering 12%, and the fourth level (intermediate) covering 5%. The total coverage rate (first to fourth levels) is an average of 92%, and Mandarin characters not included in levels 1 to 4 cover 8%.
