Abstract

Waist circumference is a method used to determine central obesity, which is a condition of excess fat accumulation in the abdominal area, resulting in abnormal waist circumference in women >80 cm and men >90 cm. This study aims to determine the difference in effectiveness between prone plank exercise and bicycle crunch exercise in reducing waist circumference in adolescents. The research method used a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest two-group design. The sample consisted of 24 participants, divided into Group I (prone plank exercise) and Group II (bicycle crunch exercise), with each group consisting of 12 participants. Both groups underwent exercise therapy for 4 weeks, with a frequency of 5 times per week, with an intensity of 30 seconds per set, repeated 3 times. The measurement tool used was a calibrated midline. The results showed that Group I (prone plank exercise) experienced a reduction in waist circumference of 5.75 cm, while Group II (bicycle crunch exercise) had a reduction of 7.91 cm, indicating that both exercise therapies have an effect on waist circumference reduction. The difference test between groups resulted in p>0.05 (p=0.747), meaning there is no significant difference between the two exercise types.

Abstract

Low back pain (LBP) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders and significantly impacts functional activities and patients’ quality of life. Non-pharmacological approaches such as hydrotherapy and William flexion exercise are widely used to reduce pain. Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of combining hydrotherapy and William flexion exercise on reducing pain in patients with myogenic low back pain. Methods: This research applied a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 20 respondents aged 40–60 years who met the inclusion criteria. The intervention was conducted over 12 sessions within one month at Biara OSF Magdalena Daemen BSB. Pain levels were measured using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Paired Sample t-Test. Results: The findings revealed a significant reduction in pain levels. The mean pretest score of 43.36 increased to 79.45 in the posttest with a difference of 36.09 points. Statistical testing showed p = 0.001 (< 0.05), indicating that the combination of hydrotherapy and William flexion exercise had a significant effect on reducing low back pain. Hydrotherapy contributed to muscle relaxation and improved circulation, while William flexion exercise strengthened lumbar flexor muscles. Conclusion: The combination of hydrotherapy and William flexion exercise is effective in reducing myogenic low back pain. This approach can be considered a safe, applicable, and beneficial non-pharmacological rehabilitation strategy to improve patients’ quality of life.

Abstract

Agility is an important aspect in futsal because it plays a role in the player's ability to make quick movements and changes of direction. Two types of exercises commonly used to improve agility are shuttle runs and zig-zag runs; however, the effectiveness of each exercise has not been clearly determined. Therefore, this study was conducted to determine the difference in the effects of shuttle run and zig-zag run exercises in improving the agility of futsal players at Tunas Muda Eleven. Research Design: This study used a quasi-experimental method with a pre-test and post-test design. A total of 22 male futsal players aged 13–15 years were divided into two groups. Group 1 received shuttle run training and Group 2 received zig-zag run training for 3 weeks, 4 sessions per week, with a total of 12 training sessions. Agility was measured using the Agility T-Test before and after the intervention. Results: Both shuttle run and zig-zag run training significantly improved agility scores (p < 0.05). But Independent Sample T-Test showed no significant difference between shuttle runs and zig-zag runs (p > 0.05). Conclusion: there was no difference in the effect of the two exercises on the agility of futsal players at Club Eleven.

Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent musculoskeletal disorders in the elderly, characterized by progressive degeneration of articular cartilage, chronic pain, joint stiffness, and reduced functional capacity. In Indonesia, the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis is notably high, affecting over 30% of individuals aged above 60 years. This condition leads to significant health burdens, impaired quality of life, and increased economic costs. Non-pharmacological management strategies such as hydrotherapy and quadriceps exercise are widely recommended to relieve pain and improve joint function. Hydrotherapy utilizes the physical properties of water including buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, viscosity, and warmth to reduce joint loading, enhance circulation, and promote relaxation. Quadriceps exercise, on the other hand, focuses on strengthening the quadriceps muscle to stabilize the knee joint, thereby reducing pain and improving functionality. The combination of these two interventions is expected to provide greater benefits than a single modality. Research Design: This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-post test approach on 12 elderly respondents with knee osteoarthritis at OSF Magdalena Daemen BSB Convent. Pain was measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) before and after the intervention, which consisted of hydrotherapy and quadriceps exercise administered twice a week for four weeks. Results: The findings showed a decrease in the mean pain score from 4.42 to 3.08, with the Wilcoxon test yielding p = 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference in pain levels before and after the intervention. Conclusion: The combination of hydrotherapy and quadriceps exercise is effective in reducing pain in patients with knee osteoarthritis.
