Abstract

The rise of trends towards an item and the fear of being left behind often creates buying and selling behavior that is no longer based on utility or exchange value, but rather through the process of giving meaning to the item, this phenomenon is often referred to as Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) behavior which influences how people subjectively assess goods, so that people tend to make sacrifices in order to follow the FOMO trend to carry out the exchange process. This study aims to explain FOMO behavior through Simmel's framework of thinking about the concept of exchange in social interaction and to find out how this FOMO phenomenon forms the meaning and social symbols produced towards the trend of an item. The method approach in this study is to use a qualitative method with a literature study analysis approach through previous studies that support and discuss similar phenomena. The results of this study indicate that Simmel's thoughts regarding subjective meaning in the concept of exchange are in line with exchange behavior in the modern era which tends to no longer prioritize the utility or exchange value of an item, and this forms an impulsive culture in the exchange process.

Abstract

When a dumping policy is in place, it affects pulp exports to South Korea, but after the dumping policy is no longer in effect, it has no effect on Indonesian pulp exports to South Korea. The construction of a sea wall in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area, Tangerang, has raised multidimensional issues involving the social exclusion of coastal communities, environmental degradation, and alleged legal irregularities in the permitting process. This study employs a literature review method to analyze the impacts of the project through Hilary Silver’s theory of social exclusion. Silver conceptualizes exclusion as a complex, multidimensional process involving the severance of access to resources, political participation, and social integration. The findings show that the sea wall, both physically and symbolically, separates coastal residents—particularly fishers—from their living space and means of livelihood. Disrupted fishing routes, increased operational costs, and damage to coastal ecosystems are among the direct consequences felt by the local community. Moreover, the lack of transparency and the potentially illegal nature of the development reinforce structural inequalities and disregard the rights of communities to space and participation. This study recommends the enforcement of spatial justice, reform of coastal development governance, and the active involvement of local communities in the planning and implementation of coastal policies.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the education policies behind the development of Sekolah Rakyat for deprived groups and Sekolah Garuda, which was established as a model of elite schools in several regions. It examines the impact of these two policies through the theoretical perspectives of Tan Malaka and Michel Apple, both of whom criticize education as often being non-neutral, excluding the poor through systems that differentiate individuals based on social class and creating “favorite schools.” Such practices indirectly lead to unequal educational distribution between schools. This study uses a qualitative research method with a literature review approach, drawing from previous studies and official data from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social Affairs, and Statistics Indonesia. The findings show that education indirectly produces social exclusion for deprived communities, evident in the differing goals, visions, curricula, and admission processes between Sekolah Rakyat and Sekolah Garuda. The development of these school’s neglects improvements in access to education for economically and demographically excluded populations. The study offers solutions for creating an inclusive and equitable education system, ensuring all communities receive fair and adequate educational opportunities.
