Abstract

This research focuses on men’s view of women by examining social facts, collective subjects, and global perspectives to understand author’s views in the poem Yā Imra’ata Musta‘badah (“O Enslaved Woman”). This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using dialectical methods. Dialectics works on the concepts of “whole–part” and “understanding–explanation.” The methods used in this research were observation and note-taking, using the genetic structuralism theory by Lucien Goldmann. The results of this study reveal the presence of social facts, collective subjects, and the author’s worldview. The social facts in Yā Imra’ata Musta‘badah are represented through depictions of violence against women. The collective subject of the poem reflects disappointment with the patriarchal system in Tunisian society, leaving women vulnerable to physical and verbal abuse. In addition, the author’s worldview, Anīs Chouchène, conveys the existence of revolutionaries as forms of transformation and resistance against the violence that occured. The underlying fact driving the poem’s creation was the patriarchal society in Tunisia, where men’s interests still took precedence over women’s. Hence, women were often denied the rights and justice they deserved.

Abstract

This article aims to examine Žižek’s concept of subjectivity through a radical character in the short story Ash-Shabiyyu al-A’raj. This study employs a descriptive qualitative design with a textual approach, using the observation method with note-taking techniques, and is grounded in Slavoj Žižek’s theoretical framework. The novelty of this research lies in both the choice of the material object and the precision of applying Žižekian analysis to the short story. The findings reveal that the existence of radical actions carried out by the character Khalil is shaped by a period of confinement that forms a radical attitude as a response to internal attachment. Khalil undergoes the stages of the imaginary, the symbolic, and the real, which ultimately construct him as a radical subject. Thus, Slavoj Žižek’s theory is employed in this study to analyze the entity of the radical subject in the short story Ash-Shabiyyu al-A’raj. This research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of Žižekian studies, particularly regarding the radical subject in Ash-Shabiyyu al-A’raj Abstract

Deixis plays a central role in establishing reference and meaning in narrative discourse, particularly in literary texts that rely on dialogue and shifting perspectives. Despite its analytical potential, deixis has received limited attention within forensic linguistics–oriented literary studies, especially in Arabic short fiction. This study addresses this gap by applying deixis analysis to uncover referential and symbolic clues in the short story Qatilu Qadim by Naguib Mahfouz, with the aim of identifying the murderer of the character Qahiri. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study uses observation and systematic note-taking based on Stephen C. Levinson’s theory of deixis, integrated with principles of forensic linguistics. Deictic expressions related to person, time, space, and social relations are analyzed to trace patterns of proximity, access, and control within the narrative. Legal interpretation of the crime is discussed in relation to the sociocultural and legal context relevant to the author. The findings reveal that Qahiri’s murderer is Abduh Mawahib, his servant, who maintained continuous physical and social proximity to the victim during a period of isolation from relatives and colleagues. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of deixis analysis as a forensic linguistic tool in literary investigation and highlights its pedagogical value in Arabic language education by fostering critical reading and analytical reasoning.
