Abstract

Abstract Conflict is an inevitable phenomenon within family life. Disputes arising in one relational domain can extend to others and may even be transmitted across generations. Conflict resolution styles have varying implications for family dynamics. Destructive or inconsistent resolution strategies can negatively impact family well-being and the socio-emotional development of children. Therefore, selecting healthy and adaptive conflict resolution styles is crucial in effective family conflict management. This literature review aims to identify various types of conflict resolution styles, explore contextual factors influencing their use, and evaluate their impact on the well-being of family members. The study employs a scoping review design, utilizing seven academic databases: Scopus, Springer, ScienceDirect, JSTOR, EBSCOhost, ProQuest, and Emerald Insight. The inclusion criteria are as follows: (1) articles published between 2015 and 2024; (2) empirical studies examining family conflict and conflict resolution or conflict management styles; (3) written in English or Indonesian; (4) available in full-text format; and (5) open access. The search yielded 20 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The review identified five conflict resolution styles, categorized into two main groups: constructive styles (compromising, obliging, and integrating) and destructive styles (avoiding and dominating). The choice of conflict resolution style is influenced by several contextual factors, including attachment style, personality traits, gender, family communication patterns, and parenting approaches. Adaptive and constructive conflict management not only facilitates conflict resolution but also strengthens family relationships.

Abstract

Parental incarceration has a significant impact on children, so resiliency is the essential thing that needs to be owned to minimize this impact. However, research on this matter is still very limited. This scoping review aims to explore the impact and resilience of children with incarcerated parents. PRISMA and five databases (Scopus, ScienceDirect, EBSCOhost, Semantic Scholar, and Springer) were used in this study. There were ten articles that met the inclusion criteria. The results have shown that parental incarceration leads to mental health problems, behavior problems, decreased academic performance, family dysfunction, and financial hardship. Social support and children’s involvement in positive activities will help the resilience process. Future research can focus on the dynamics of resilience by considering the stages of development and cultural context, as well as its relation to preventive, intervention, and rehabilitation efforts for children with incarcerated parents, especially in Indonesia.
