Abstract

Advancements in robotics technology and control systems offer schools opportunities to enhance students technological literacy and computational thinking skills from an early age. However, students understanding of fundamental concept such as robotics, sensors, microcontrollers, and control systems still requires improvement through hands on learning activities. This community service initiative aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of students at SMP Muhammadiyah 4 East Jakarta regarding the identification, assembly, programming, and operation of line-following robots. The implementation method comprised several stages: preparation, material presentation, demonstrations, hands on component assembly, microcontroller programming, robot testing, and activity evaluation. Participants gained an understanding of the operating principles of line sensors, microcontrollers, DC motors, motor drivers, and robot motion control algorithms. The activity was conducted through hands-on group work, allowing students to actively engage in identifying components, assembling circuits, programming, and testing the robots on a track. Following the assembly process, a post-test was administered to assess the students comprehension of the theory and practice involved; the results demonstrated an improvement in their understanding and skills regarding line-following robots. The 23 participants achieved an average score of 74.34, a commendable result for 7th grade junior high students encountering robotics fundamentals for the first time. This initiative demonstrates that practice-based robotics training serves as an engaging and practical alternative for technology education at the junior high level and could be incorporated into school extracurricular programs.
