Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of syncope in the Selawat Dulang performance in Nagari Malalo, Batipuh Selatan District, Tanah Datar Regency, with a focus on the musical aesthetic aspect. Selawat Dulang is a form of traditional Minangkabau performing arts that combines elements of music, preaching, and religious rituals, which are usually performed in religious and customary contexts. One of the characteristics of this performance is the use of syncope, namely a shift in rhythmic accents that violate the strong beats in the rhythmic structure. This syncope gives its own color to the musical flow of Selawat Dulang, creating rhythmic tension that enriches the artistic nuances and strengthens the emotional relationship between the performers and the audience. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach, through direct observation and in-depth interviews with artists and the audience. The results of the study show that syncope not only functions as a musical element, but also contains symbolic meanings that emphasize the cultural identity of the Malalo community. These findings are expected to broaden the understanding of the aesthetics of traditional performing arts and contribute to the preservation and development of local art studies in Indonesia.
