Abstract

Abstract This study investigated the effectiveness of Social-control technique (SCT) on reducing bullying tendencies among primary school pupils and sex difference in Edo state, Nigeria and suggested some implications for counselling. The design was the quasi-experimental research design. Three research questions and their corresponding hypotheses guided the study, while the population comprised of four thousand four hundred and sixty seven (44 67) 2020/2021Basic (5) pupils in primary schools in Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. The instrument used for the study was a questionnaire titled “Olweus Bully/Victims Questionnaire’’ (OBVQ) and modified by the researchers. Data collected were analysed using paired t-test and Fisher Z-test and independent samples statistics. The findings of the study revealed that SCT was effective in reducing bullying tendencies among primary school pupils as determined by their pre-test and post-test mean scores. Self-control technique had significant efficacy of reducing bullying tendencies on the experimental group. Based on the findings, it was recommended that school Guidance Counsellors should make use of Self-control technique to correct pupils’ bullying behaviour.

Abstract

The study investigated Family type and Family size as correlates of parents'/guardians' disposition towards girl-child education amongst female students in public tertiary institutions in Delta state, Nigeria. Two research aims, with their corresponding advantages were raised and tested at 0.05 alpha levels. Correlational survey design was used with a population was ten thousand five hundred and thirty-six (10,536) female students from three (3) public tertiary institutions, with a sample of 250 female students. The multistage sampling technique was adopted and a questionnaire titled "Family Types, Family size and Socioeconomic Status Questionnaire" (FTFTSSQ) adapted from Ofuani (2013), was used as the instrument and it consisted of three sections, A, B and C, with reliability coefficient of .88. The hypothesis was analysed using linear regression. The results indicated that Family type significantly predicts parents’/guardians’ disposition towards girl-child education. However, family size, does not significantly predict parents’/guardians’ disposition towards girl-child education in tertiary institutions in Delta State. It was concluded that Family type significantly predicts parents’/guardians’ disposition towards girl-child education; while, family size does not significantly predict parents’/guardians’ disposition towards girl-child education. Among the recommendations was that smaller family be encouraged, such as monogamy so as to allow the flow of scarce resources in pursuing the girl-child education in tertiary institutions and also, there was need for smaller family size, as larger family size was perceived to negate a child's outcomes due to scarce resources

Abstract

The study examined coupling sex and emotional expressiveness and how they affect marital intimacy among married couples in Benin Metropolis of Edo state, Nigeria. Three hypotheses were raised to guide the study, while the descriptive correlational research design was adopted. Four hundred and fifty (450) spouses drawn from two churches (each from Pentecostal and Orthodox churches) in Benin metropolis were selected through simple sampling technique and convenience sampling method. The instrument used for the study was the researcher’s structured questionnaire titled Coupling Sex, Emotional Expressiveness and Marital Intimacy Questionnaire (C S E M I Q). Data collected were analysed using regression analysis. The findings of the study revealed that a combination of frequent coupling sex and emotional expressiveness had significant contribution to marital intimacy, while coupling sex and emotional expressiveness had some level of significant influence on marital intimacy. Based on the findings, it was recommended that Couples should sensitize regularly on the importance of regular and pleasurable sex and positive emotional expression in order to enhance healthy marital intimacy.
