Abstract

A number of military archaeological remains, which are found in various places in Indonesia, both in the form of monumental remains such as various local and colonial forts as well as non-monumental remains such as weapons, reflect the existence of the political, social and economic constellation that underlie the founding of these remains. Chronologically, although not necessarily in a linear order, military archaeological remains in the form of colonial fortresses originated from efforts to secure economic activities by placing beachheads in strategic places before evolving naturally into hardware to demonstrate their colonial political role. Meanwhile (or vice versa), the establishment of local or non-colonial fortresses was more of a response to counterbalance the development and spread of colonial strongholds in the past which were considered to threaten the power of local kings.

Abstract

From several sources obtained regarding the existence of the Dutch fort in Sumenep, it appears that there were various events that occurred during the usage of the fort. In addition, there are several conflicting matters which still require further explanation. Various sources say that at first the Sumenep fortress had both military and civilian functions, which is evident from the mention of the fort as the residence of the Dutch trade representatives, although in the end the fort only functioned militarily, namely by adding troops who protected the fort and the appointment of a lieutenant as commander. There was also resistance to the British, which probably involved the fort as a means of defense.

Abstract

Regarding the archaeological remains in the form of Fort Rotterdam in Makassar, there are still many things that can be revealed from this fort through specific archaeological studies with the help of Makassar historical sources. Archaeological studies that can be carried out on the remains of the fortress of Rotterdam include the art style of building the fort that was used at that time (XVII century) in Sulawesi, especially South Sulawesi, and what types of activities had occurred in the fort during its use. Thus, it is hoped that holistic data can be obtained about the ins and outs of the Rotterdam fort so that it can be used in its preservation efforts.

Abstract

Archaeological remains in the form of a fort are one of the problems in cultural resource management. On the one hand, it appears that these fortresses need attention and need to be preserved, but on the other hand, various factors appear to be less supportive of the efforts towards preservation. It is hoped that with the growing interest in the preservation of various cultural heritages, the remains in the form of a fort can be "touched" by these efforts, before what is left is really only a fragment of the story.

Abstract

One of the means of defense dating from the colonial period in Java is the Dutch fortresses, some of which can still be seen today. The existence of these fortresses implied a conflict between community groups in the archipelago against the colonialists, which forced the colonial side to establish various means of defense to counter the people's struggle. Among a number of former Dutch forts in Java, one that can still be seen is a fort located in Jepara. This fort, known as Benteng VOC or Benteng Kompeni, is located in Ujung Batu Village, Jepara District, Jepara Regency, Central Java Province. To be precise, the fort was located at the top of a hill overlooking the Java Sea.

Abstract
