Abstract

Integration of human knowledge principle has been widespread in the world of Islamic education, including in Indonesia. Partially seen as an attempt to build a school of thought of architecture education, the principle opens the discussion on the discursive level of design thinking. This paper reveals an explorative effort to translate the idea into a class experiment in an architectural design studio. This class experimental research uses a content analysis of students’ reflective writing who involve the design process that deliberately begins with the introduction of revealed knowledge (Arabic: wahy) in Architectural Design Studio 7 at the Department of Architecture, Universitas Islam Indonesia. In conclusion, it has formulated a dynamic and multi-dimensional construction of design thinking based on the integration of knowledge

Abstract

Abstract

The development of agropolitan areas can deny the false assumption that the developed regions are transformed into urban areas and changes in the dominant role of the agricultural sector to the industrial sector, and services. Assuming that the agricultural sector calculates downstream production up to agro-processing activities, an area can be called advanced by still characterizing the rural areas and the dominant role of the agricultural sector. Based on the results of analysis of excellent potential characteristics with the Sleman region then determined superior food commodities supported by many other commodities. The pre-eminent food commodities are salak fruit located in Turi District and freshwater fish commodities bred in ponds located in Ngemplak sub-district. The two leading food commodities can then be developed into superior products supported by various other food products in order to produce various kinds of food diversification to improve the agropolitanbased rural economy. Based on the results of SWOT analysis related to the potential superior characteristics with the Sleman region then determined superior food commodities supported by many other commodities. The pre-eminent food commodities are salak fruit located in Turi District and freshwater fish commodities bred in ponds located in Ngemplak sub-district. The two leading food commodities can then be developed into superior products supported by various other food products in order to produce various kinds of food diversification to improve the agropolitan-based rural economy. Examples of derivatives of salak pondoh products are salak chips, dodol salak, salak syrup, candied salak, coffee seeds bark and others. Examples of innovations that have been developed is the diversification of catfish and tilapia into catfish abon, catfish chips, crispy tilapia, fish crackers and others that have the durability / durability up to a year more in packaging

Abstract

The idea of integrating human knowledge and Islamic values, or Islamization of knowledge, has triggered fruitful discussions, but the concrete output in terms of an ‘Islamized' textbook has not occurred. In this paper, we report practical insights from the textbook writing initiative at Universitas Islam Indonesia (UII) to materialize the idea. Our reflection on the ongoing process has identified several challenges. These include diversity of the disciplines, limited exposure to the philosophy of knowledge, lack of ready-to-use integration methods and inadequate mastery of the Islamic legacy. To cope with the challenges, we have taken several actions, including arranging a series of workshops (on the philosophy of knowledge and integration strategies), providing relevant literature and offering technical assistance. In concluding, we present an overview of the future directions that UII will take. Keywords: textbook writing; Islamization of knowledge; integration of human knowledge.

Abstract

Housing cannot be separated from the discourse of carbon emissions in all building cycles: planning and design, material preparation, construction, operations, and demolition. Various countries have successfully reduced carbon emissions in the housing sector, one of which is by using policy instruments. However, reviewing the effectiveness of these policies has yet to be thoroughly explored. Using the systematic literature review method, this article aims to identify the policies implemented to reduce carbon emissions in housing and contextualize them for Indonesia. After careful identification of the relevant articles, 16 selected articles were reviewed. The study found that taxation, zero-carbonization, and strategies for retrofitting are adequate policies in many countries. Framework for Indonesia was discussed for recommendations.

Abstract

Pesantren (Islamic Boarding School) is an indigenous educational institution originally from Indonesia and perhaps a unique form of the traditional Islamic education system and spreading to Southeast Asia that neighbouring countries. However, studies on pesantren rarely address physical elements and architecture. Learning pesantren architecture challenges us with representation: definition, how to visualize its form and program, and the design. Finding a body of knowledge on pesantren to excavate "architectural features" is important to study its prospect in architectural terms. This paper attempts to analyze pesantren from the architectural perspective, focusing on the specific feature and finding its current issues, challenges, and prospects for the design framework. Two combination research methods were used: Systematic literature review and case study. A systematic literature review was conducted in the first stage to map the distinctive spatial quality of pesantren. In the second stage, three case studies were conducted to report and analyze the current issues, challenges, and prospects for the design framework. The research shows that the variety of physical conditions is the main current issue of pesantren. The main challenge is the shortage of financial availability while the spatial need to cater to population and development is more increasing. Those conflicting narratives open local responses through incremental design processes in which contextual design frameworks are needed.
