Abstract

This study aims to identify barriers and strategies used by teachers in learning Indonesian for deaf students at the UPT SLB-E Negeri Pembina Provincial Level. Deaf students face obstacles in developing language skills due to limited access to hearing which has an impact on the ability to understand language structures, vocabulary, and written and oral expressions. This research uses descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques in the form of observation and semi-structured interviews with Indonesian language teachers. The results showed that the main obstacles in learning Indonesian for deaf students include low interest in learning, difficulty understanding text, limited visual learning media, and inadequate learning facilities. The strategies used by teachers include the use of sign language, visual media such as powerpoint, writing key points on the board, and seating arrangements to support cooperation between students. This approach aims to create a conducive and interactive learning atmosphere so that deaf students can understand the material more effectively. This research confirms the importance of adaptive and creative approaches in Indonesian language learning for students with special needs, especially the deaf
