Abstract

Medium-scale goat farmers in Pematangsiantar still mix feed manually, resulting in inhomogeneous mixing and long work times. This Community Service project aims to empower farmers through the implementation of a livestock feed mixer machine based on appropriate technology. The method used is a participatory community service approach with primary data from observations, interviews, and machine performance tests, as well as secondary data from technical literature. The results show an increase in mixing time efficiency from approximately 20 minutes to approximately 10 minutes per batch, with a homogeneity level above 90%. The machine is easy to operate and energy efficient. In conclusion, the machine designed by Mechanical Engineering students at Simalungun University effectively increases production capacity, work efficiency, and the independence of medium-scale farmers.

Abstract

This community service program aims to improve the efficiency and quality of production of dough-based food Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) through the implementation of a paddle-type bakpao dough mixer with a capacity of 10 kg/hour in Pematangsiantar City. The activity began with identifying the problems of partners who still rely on manual mixing processes, which results in long production times and inconsistent dough quality. The community service team designed a machine based on a 0.5 HP electric motor with a pulley-V belt transmission system and a horizontal mixer made of food-grade stainless steel. After undergoing training and mentoring, partners were able to operate the machine independently. Evaluation results showed that the use of the machine was able to reduce mixing time from ± 30 minutes to ± 12 minutes per batch and produce a more homogeneous dough. In addition to increasing time efficiency, there was an increase in production capacity and a potential increase in daily income by 30–50%. This activity not only presented applicable technical solutions but also strengthened partners' production capacity in a sustainable manner. This program proves that the integration of appropriate technology and a participatory approach can encourage MSME independence and expand the socio-economic impact based on local innovation.

Abstract

Farmers in Karang Sari Village face limitations in animal feed processing due to the continued use of inefficient manual corn cracking methods. This Community Service Project aims to design and implement a simple corn cracking machine based on appropriate technology to improve feed production efficiency. The method used is applied Community Service with a participatory engineering approach, collecting data through observation, interviews, and machine performance testing. The results of the Community Service show that the machine is able to reduce work time by up to 80%, lower operational costs, and improve the quality of corn cracking results. In conclusion, this machine is an effective, affordable, and easy-to-operate alternative solution to support livestock farmers' independence in sustainable feed processing.
