Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of social media by individuals with visual impairments in building daily interactions within the North Sumatra branch of Pertuni (Indonesian Blind Union). The research employed a descriptive qualitative method through interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings reveal that social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and YouTube serve as vital tools for communication, information access, and strengthening social networks among the visually impaired. Accessibility features, including screen readers and voice notes, enable them to remain active in digital spaces. The use of social media also aligns with the Uses and Gratifications theory, where members utilize it to fulfill needs for communication, entertainment, self-identity, and community solidarity. Furthermore, Pertuni plays a crucial role in supporting digital literacy through training and mentorship, making social media not only a means of personal communication but also a collective instrument for empowerment and organizational strengthening. Thus, social media has proven to contribute significantly in creating a more inclusive digital space for individuals with visual impairments in Pertuni North Sumatra.
