Abstract

This study explores the impact of personality traits on the socio-cultural adaptation of Indragiri Hilir students in Ponorogo, using the Big Five Personality Traits and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). Data were analyzed with PLS-SEM. Neuroticism has the strongest influence on Attitude Towards Behavior (ƒ² = 0.648), while other traits have minor effects. ATB (ƒ² = 0.205) and Subjective Norms (ƒ² = 0.210) moderately affect socio-cultural behavior changes. The model shows strong predictive ability for ATB (R² = 0.856), moderate for CSB (R² = 0.595), and small for SN (R² = 0.487). The findings emphasize the role of personality in adaptation and recommend cultural exchange programs for student organizations.

Abstract

One organization that plays a significant role in shaping the identity and development of migrant students is the Association of Indragiri Hilir Students (IPMI) Ponorogo. This association unites students from Indragiri Hilir studying in Ponorogo, providing a platform for solidarity, leadership, and cultural preservation. This study aims to examine the influence of students’ personality culture and organizational leadership on self-development and its impact on self-efficacy. The research involved 48 active members of the Indragiri Hilir Student Association (IPMI) in Ponorogo, using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The results revealed that organizational leadership significantly influenced self-development (β = 0.708; p = 0.002), whereas personality culture had no significant effect on either self-development (β = 0.155; p = 0.503) or self-efficacy (β = 0.300; p = 0.294). Self-development had a strong and significant effect on self-efficacy (β = 0.679; p = 0.001). Additionally, self-development significantly mediated the effect of organizational leadership on self-efficacy (β = 0.480; p = 0.009), but not the effect of personality culture (β = 0.105; p = 0.571). The model’s explanatory power was high, with R² values of 72.9% for self-development and 72.0% for self-efficacy. These findings highlight the critical role of organizational leadership in fostering students' personal growth and confidence.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of personality on interpersonal communication skills and cross-cultural adaptation of students from Sumatra studying in East Java. This phenomenon is important because of differences in communication norms between the two regions that could potentially create adaptation barriers. The study used an ex-post facto cross-sectional design with 85 respondents, analyzed through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results showed that interpersonal communication skills significantly influenced Big Five personality (β = 0.626; p < 0.01) and cross-cultural adaptation (β = 0.287; p < 0.05). Big Five personality also contributed strongly to cross-cultural adaptation (β = 0.489; p < 0.001), with an R² value of 0.818 for adaptation. Conversely, acculturation strategies were not proven to have a direct effect on personality or adaptation. These findings confirm that interpersonal communication plays a key role in bridging the influence of personality on successful cultural adaptation. Theoretically, this study expands the integration of the Big Five Personality Traits with the Berry Acculturation Model in the context of domestic migrant students in Indonesia, a relatively understudied area. Practically, the results encourage universities to strengthen communication soft skills development programs and provide multicultural interaction spaces to support student adaptation.
