Abstract

Plastic waste is one of the most urgent environmental problems and continues to increase along with the development of industrial and tourism areas, including in North Minahasa Regency. The high volume of plastic waste generation has not been supported by an adequate management system, resulting in most of the plastic waste polluting the environment. This condition requires innovative solutions to convert plastic waste into valuable products. One approach implemented in this program is the Teaching Factory concept, which integrates learning processes with real production activities. The activities focused on processing plastic waste collected from the community, which was then converted into ready-to-use chair and table products. Through the Teaching Factory approach at the Polimdo campus and partner sites, students and lecturers were directly involved in every stage of production, starting from sorting, shredding, melting, molding, to product assembly. This program successfully collected 47 kg of HDPE, PET, and PP plastic waste, which was then sorted and recycled into plastic sheets, resulting in four chair products and two table products that are ready to use.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian pada masyarakat ini bertujuan mengoptimalkan pemanfaatan sistem energi surya sebagai sumber energi alternatif yang ramah lingkungan dan berkelanjutan untuk mendukung proses daur ulang sampah plastik di Desa Wisata Wiau Lapi, Kecamatan Tareran, Kabupaten Minahasa Selatan Sulawesi Utara. Metode pelaksanaan meliputi kegiatan sosialisasi kepada masyarakat mengenai pentingnya energi terbarukan, pemasangan peralatan sistem panel surya, pelatihan operasional, serta pendampingan pemanfaatan dalam proses daur ulang sampah plastik. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan sistem tenaga surya berkapasitas 500 Wp mampu menghasilkan daya listrik untuk alat dan mesin daur ulang plastik dengan efisiensi energi mencapai 65% dan pengurangan biaya operasional hingga 40%. Penerapan teknologi ini mampu meningkatkan produktivitas pengolahan sampah plastik, mengurangi biaya operasional UMKM, dan meningkatkan kesadaran masyarakat terhadap energi bersih, serta mendukung terwujudnya desa wisata mandiri energi dan berkelanjutan di desa wisata Wiau Lapi, Sulawesi Utara.

Abstract

Global plastic waste continues to grow, making recycling essential for supporting a circular economy. Process parameters, especially heating temperature during sheet pressing, strongly influence the quality of recycled products. Objective: This study investigates how heating temperature affects the impact toughness and hardness of recycled Polypropylene (PP) and High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) produced using a sheet press machine, and identifies the optimal processing temperature for improved mechanical performance. Methodology: This research used a quantitative experimental approach. Recycled PP and HDPE were shredded, then heated at 160°C, 170°C, 180°C, and 190°C for 120 minutes, and molded into sheet specimens using a sheet press machine. Mechanical properties were evaluated using Charpy impact testing in accordance with ASTM D6110 and Rockwell hardness testing (M scale) following ASTM D785. Results were compared across temperature variations to determine performance trends. Findings: Both materials showed improved impact toughness and hardness as temperature increased up to 180°C, indicating better melt uniformity, fewer voids, and stronger molecular bonding. For HDPE, impact toughness increased from 2.3 J at 160°C to 8.675 J at 170°C, reaching its peak at 180°C, then decreased at 190°C, suggesting early thermal degradation. For PP, the highest average hardness was 15.52 HRM at 180°C, followed by a decline at 190°C, consistent with structural softening and reduced crystallinity. Implications: The results suggest that controlling heating temperature particularly around 180°C can enhance the manufacturing efficiency and product quality of recycled plastic sheets, supporting more reliable and sustainable material utilization. Originality: This study provides practical evidence on the temperature–property relationship for sheet-pressed recycled PP and HDPE under controlled heating conditions and confirms 180°C as an optimal temperature before thermal damage reduces structural integrity.

Abstract

Permasalahan utama di Desa Sarawet, Kecamatan Likupang Timur, Sulawesi Utara, adalah rendahnya kapasitas pengolahan sampah plastik akibat keterbatasan teknologi dan keterampilan masyarakat dalam mengelola limbah secara produktif. Kondisi ini menyebabkan potensi ekonomi sirkular belum termanfaatkan secara optimal. Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kapasitas teknis dan manajerial pelaku UMKM dalam mengolah sampah plastik menjadi produk bernilai ekonomi melalui penerapan teknologi mesin pencacah dan strategi pemasaran digital. Metode pelaksanaan mencakup tahapan observasi dan pemetaan kebutuhan mitra, pelatihan operasional mesin pencacah dan keselamatan kerja (K3), pendampingan produksi cacahan dan lembaran plastik, serta penguatan pemasaran berbasis media sosial. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan signifikan pada kapasitas produksi, di mana kemampuan pencacahan plastik meningkat dari 15 kg menjadi rata-rata 35 kg per siklus produksi, dan peningkatan produksi lembaran plastik dari satu menjadi tiga lembar per siklus.  Mitra juga mulai menerapkan pemasaran digital yang menghasilkan peningkatan interaksi publik terhadap produk daur ulang plastik. Dampak kegiatan ini meliputi peningkatan produktivitas UMKM, tumbuhnya kesadaran ekonomi sirkular di masyarakat, serta terbentuknya jaringan kerja sama lokal untuk mendukung rantai pasok pengumpulan plastik. Secara keseluruhan, program ini berhasil mengintegrasikan aspek teknologi, ekonomi, dan lingkungan dalam upaya penguatan kemandirian masyarakat pesisir berbasis daur ulang plastik di Desa Sarawet.
