Abstract

The existence of hermeneutics in turn has a major influence on the development of a multi-interpretative world of interpretation. Hans-Georg Gadamer's theory is used to interpret the Koran through its hermeneutical style of thinking which has a philosophical-productive nuance. Meanwhile, Fakhruddin al-Razi is a popular interpretation scholar who often carries out theological debates among rationalists and traditionalists through his logical ideas. This study departs from the concept of Islam kaffah which is warmly echoed by religious activists as a theological discourse to welcome Muslims to return to "complete Islam". To reveal a message that is more meaningful than the literal meaning of Islam kaffah, the purpose of this study begins by elaborating the basic theories of Hans-George Gadamer's hermeneutics, then using them as an analytical knife in reading the concept of Islam kaffah from the perspective of Fakhruddin al-Razi in Q.S al-Baqarah [2]: 208. This type of study is qualitative with a literature approach. The data collection method uses documentation techniques, while the data analysis method uses a philosophical approach. The resulting meanings include a sign to leave sin and immorality, the word al-silmi means the state of a servant who is pleased and does not feel heavy-hearted about the destiny that has been set by Allah, and finally the general meaning of the verse is to stay away from anger and revenge.

Abstract

The hadith on preferences in choosing a life partner “Women are married for four reasons…” is frequently interpreted in a partial and hierarchical manner, placing physical aspects such as beauty, wealth, and lineage on the same level as, or even above, religious values. Such textual-literal readings reproduce patriarchal norms and overlook the historical context of the hadith’s emergence. This study reinterprets the hadith through Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, emphasizing pre-understanding and the fusion of horizons between text and reader. Using a qualitative–critical approach and drawing on both classical (turāth) and contemporary scholarship, this research finds that religion in the hadith is not merely one of four equal considerations but serves as a normative critique of the materialistic and status-oriented tendencies of Arab society at the time. Non-physical criteria such as moral integrity, responsibility, and mutual respect represent the core religious values that should be prioritized. Through Gadamerian hermeneutics, the hadith is contextualized as an ethical guideline for forming marital relationships that are balanced, just, and free from patriarchal domination, reaffirming the primacy of religious values in contemporary practice

Abstract

The rejection of Surah Al-Fatihah as part of the Quran does not only come from Western scholars but also from Muslim scholars. This becomes interesting to study and analyze further because Al-Fatihah, which is notably the foremost surah in the Quran, is not exempt from controversy and conflicting opinions, not only from Western scholars but also from Eastern scholars. The data sources used consist of primary sources obtained from the works of several Orientalists and secondary sources obtained from previous research. The results of this study indicate that, firstly, from the perspective of Orientalists, in this case, Arthur Jeffery, Surah Al-Fatihah is a surah that is not connected to the other surahs (it was not originally part of the text). According to Jeffery, Al-Fatihah is a composed prayer like other sacred books in other religions. Secondly, this argument is based on a hypothesis that Al-Fatihah has been influenced by various foreign languages such as Ethiopian, Aramaic, Hebrew, Syriac, Ancient Greek, Persian, and others. Consequently, the vocabulary in the Quran adopts terms from Judaism, Christianity, and other cultures. Based on the discourse on the controversy of Surah Al-Fatihah above, thirdly, Jeffery's study has provided an interesting historical reality about Surah Al-Fatihah, but his evidence has not been able to refute the existing fact that Al-Fatihah is still believed to be part of the Quran.

Abstract

The hadith regarding preferences in choosing a life partner, which states, "Women are married for four reasons..." is often interpreted in a partial and hierarchical manner, where physical aspects such as beauty, wealth, and lineage are positioned equally or even above religious values. This textual-literal interpretation tends to reproduce patriarchal norms and disregards the historical context in which the hadith was revealed. This study aims to reinterpret the hadith through the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer, emphasizing pre-understanding and the fusion of horizons between the text and the reader. A qualitative-critical approach is employed, drawing on classical (turāth) and contemporary literature as the foundation for analysis. The findings reveal that religion, as mentioned in the hadith, is not merely one of four equal considerations but represents a normative critique against the materialistic and status-driven tendencies of Arab society at the time. Non-physical criteria such as moral integrity, responsibility, and mutual respect are identified as the essence of religious values to be prioritized. Through Gadamerian hermeneutics, this hadith can be contextualized as an ethical guideline for establishing marital relationships that are balanced, just, and free from patriarchal domination. Thus, this study offers an alternative, reflective, and contextually grounded interpretation of the hadith, reaffirming the importance of religious values in contemporary social practice.
