POTENTIAL OF BITTER MELON LEAF SOLUTION AS A TEAT-DIPPING ANTISEPTIC ON MASTITIS SCORE AND pH VALUE OF FRESH MILK AbstractMastitis is a common udder health disorder in dairy cows and has a direct impact on milk production and quality. Bitter melon leaves (Momordica charantia L.) contain bioactive compounds with antimicrobial properties, making them a potential alternative antiseptic for teat dipping. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of bitter melon leaf solution on the California Mastitis Test (CMT) score and the acidity (pH) of fresh milk. The materials used in this study included nine healthy Friesian Holstein crossbred dairy cows in their 2nd–3rd lactation period, CMT reagents, and young bitter melon leaves, water for preparing the bitter melon leaf solution, and fresh milk obtained after teat dipping. The research method employed was an experimental. Approach with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Three treatments were applied, each with four replications. The treatments consisted of teat dipping using povidone iodine as the control (P0), teat dipping using 15% bitter melon leaf solution (P1), and 20% bitter melon leaf solution (P2). The treatments were administered for 15 days, and variable testing was conducted weekly. The observed variables were mastitis score and milk pH value. The collected data were analyzed using ANOVA. The results showed that the use of bitter melon leaf solution had no significant effect (P>0.05) on either mastitis score or milk pH value. The average mastitis scores were P0 = 1.08; P1 = 1.00; and P2 = 1.00, while the average milk pH values were P0 = 6.6; P1 = 6.6; and P2 = 6.5.The conclusion is the bitter melon leaf solution has the potential to serve as an effective teat-dipping antiseptic comparable to povidone iodine based on the observed milk pH and CMT results.
