Abstract

This study examines Ibn Khaldun's concept of al-'umran as the basis for developing a humanistic and sustainable curriculum in the context of contemporary Islamic education. Ibn Khaldun's thoughts on the dynamics of civilisation, social development, and the importance of education as a driver of progress show strong relevance to curriculum design oriented towards the formation of dignified and civilised human beings. Previous studies have focused more on Ibn Khaldun's contributions to sociology, historiography, or civilisation theory, while its application to the development of a humanistic-sustainable curriculum is still limited and has not been systematically integrated. This study uses a qualitative method based on literature review with textual analysis of the Muqaddimah and supporting works, as well as concept mapping of modern curriculum theory and sustainable education principles. The results show that al-'umran provides a comprehensive philosophical framework for designing a curriculum that emphasises the interrelationship between humans, society and the environment, rationality, morality and sustainability. The novelty of this research lies in the formulation of a conceptual model of a humanistic-sustainable curriculum that synthesises Ibn Khaldun's theory of civilisation with the educational needs of the 21st century, thereby contributing theoretically to the development of a more progressive, integrative, and responsive Islamic curriculum.
