Abstract

Thermoelectric cooler boxes offer an environmentally friendly, energy-efficient, and portable cooling solution. However, the performance of thermoelectric cooling systems is highly dependent on the effectiveness of heat dissipation on the hot side of the Peltier module (TEC). This study aims to experimentally investigate the impact of using a Water Cooling Block (WCB) compared to a conventional heat sink fan on the cooling performance of a thermoelectric-based cooler box. The experimental setup involved two configurations for the hot side cooling system, where parameters such as hot-side temperature, cabin temperature, and Coefficient of Performance (COP) were measured and analyzed. The experimental results showed that the use of WCB was able to significantly reduce the temperature on the hot side, with a temperature reduction in the cabin reaching 20.35 °C and an average COP of 0.09687. Meanwhile, the TEC-fan temperature in the cabin cooler box was lower at 21.45 °C, with an average COP value of 0.04718. Therefore, the Water Cooling Block demonstrates superior efficiency and thermal management compared to the heat sink fan, offering enhanced performance for thermoelectric cooler box applications in various low-temperature storage needs.

Abstract

This study presents a mathematical modeling and thermal performance analysis of a Thermoelectric Cooler Box (TEC) equipped with two hot-side heat rejection systems: a Water Cooling Block (WCB) and a Heatsink–Fan (HSF). Thermoelectric cooling offers an environmentally friendly alternative to vapor-compression refrigeration because it operates without refrigerants and requires only low-voltage DC power. The objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of electrical current on temperature distribution, cooling capacity (Qc), and the coefficient of performance (COP) of a TEC1-12706 module under both cooling configurations. The mathematical model is formulated based on the energy balance between the cold and hot sides, incorporating the Peltier effect, thermal conduction, and Joule heating losses. Numerical simulations were performed in Python for currents ranging from 1 to 7 A. The results show that the WCB reduces the hot-side temperature (Tₕ) by 6–8 °C compared with the HSF, indicating superior heat rejection. However, the HSF system achieves a slightly higher COP (about 5–7%) due to the lower cold-side temperature (Tc) obtained in the WCB configuration, which reduces the effective Peltier cooling term. The maximum COP for both systems occurs at 3–4 A, corresponding to a temperature difference (ΔT) of approximately 28 °C. Although the cooling capacity of the WCB is slightly lower (<10%) due to increased back-conduction, it offers better thermal stability and long-term performance consistency. Overall, the developed mathematical model accurately represents the TEC’s thermal behavior and provides a reliable foundation for optimizing water-cooled thermoelectric designs.

Abstract

Patemon Village in Seririt District, Buleleng Regency, still performs the Ngaben cremation ceremony using open burning with firewood. This traditional practice creates several problems, including high wood consumption, substantial costs, long cremation duration, and thick smoke that potentially pollutes the environment and affects public health. This community service program aims to implement appropriate technology in the form of an eco-friendly cremation stove to improve the efficiency of the cremation process without reducing the sacred value of the ritual. The implementation methods include problem identification, design and fabrication of the stove, socialization and training for residents, application in several Ngaben ceremonies, and technical and social evaluation through combustion parameter measurements and questionnaires. The results show that the stove can shorten cremation time by approximately 40%, reduce firewood consumption by 45–50%, decrease ash residue, and significantly lower smoke intensity. Firewood costs also decline, while the majority of community members and traditional leaders consider the technology easy to operate and consistent with customary procedures. The eco-friendly cremation stove can thus serve as a sustainable solution that integrates technical efficiency, environmental conservation, and the preservation of the Ngaben tradition in Patemon Village.
