Abstract

Abstract This study aims to examine the meaning of the prohibition in the hadith regarding individuals who consume garlic and then enter the mosque, focusing on the social and spiritual context of the Prophet’s message. The issue is intriguing because garlic is a lawful food, yet it becomes prohibited in relation to the sanctity of worship spaces. This research employs a qualitative approach using library research methods to analyze relevant hadiths through a contextual perspective that considers their historical, situational, and purposive dimensions. The analysis involves exploring the textual expressions, social conditions at the time the hadith was delivered, and its implications for contemporary religious practice. The findings reveal that the prohibition does not concern the lawfulness of consuming garlic itself, but rather aims to preserve the purity and comfort of the mosque as a shared place of worship. Contextually, this prohibition conveys an ethical message for believers to maintain personal hygiene and avoid disturbing others’ concentration during prayer. The contribution of this study lies in its reinterpretation of the hadith through a contextual lens, offering a more balanced and relevant understanding of religious texts. Its originality and value rest in harmonizing textual interpretation with universal values of cleanliness, social ethics, and respect for sacred spaces.

Abstract

The inheritance system in Minangkabau, known for its matrilineal lineage, offers a unique perspective on property distribution, especially when contrasted with the patrilineal structure of Islamic inheritance law. This research delves into the historical and cultural evolution of the Minangkabau inheritance system, examining how it has adapted over time due to various social, legal, and religious influences. While Minangkabau customary law (adat) traditionally prioritizes female heirs, particularly through maternal lines, Islamic inheritance law advocates a more balanced approach, emphasizing the rights of both male and female heirs based on predetermined shares. The contrast between these two systems raises important questions about gender justice and the equitable distribution of wealth. Through a detailed exploration of Minangkabau customs and Islamic jurisprudence, this study investigates how these systems have coexisted and the efforts made by scholars and legal authorities to reconcile the differences. A significant focus is placed on the role of reformist thinkers within the Minangkabau community, who have sought to align local practices with the broader principles of Islamic inheritance law while preserving cultural identity. The research also examines the practical implications of these reform efforts, particularly in light of the evolving role of women in Minangkabau society and the growing calls for gender equality. The findings offer valuable insights into the potential for developing an inheritance model that respects both cultural traditions and Islamic values of justice, ultimately contributing to a broader discourse on gender equity in inheritance laws across diverse Muslim societies.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic raised significant theological and legal questions concerning the implementation of congregational worship and public health measures within Muslim communities. Although ḥadīths on epidemics have long served as normative references in Islamic jurisprudence, their contemporary interpretation and practical application in religious legal opinions (fatwas) and local contexts remain insufficiently examined. This study aims to analyze the flexibility of the Prophet Muḥammad's ḥadīths on epidemics and their implementation in contemporary fatwas and Muslim religious practices in North Sumatra, Indonesia. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design, the study combines thematic analysis of authentic ḥadīths, comparative analysis of institutional fatwas, and qualitative interviews with Muslim scholars in North Sumatra. The findings demonstrate that the ḥadīths articulate enduring principles of epidemic management, including regional quarantine, isolation of infected individuals, medical treatment, tawakkul (trust in God), and the spiritual merit associated with patience during epidemics. Contemporary Muslim scholars reinterpret these principles contextually while preserving their normative foundations. The North Sumatra case further reveals that differences in the implementation of fatwas are shaped by contrasting textualist and maqāṣid-oriented approaches as well as by local social and religious dynamics. This study highlights the adaptability of Islamic legal reasoning in responding to public health crises and contributes to the development of a more systematic and anticipatory framework for pandemic fiqh.
