Abstract

Elephant grass is a palatable forage with good nutritional value for ruminant livestock, and a good forage material to make silage. However, silage that only relies on grass material has a relatively low protein content. Forage feed, a combination of grass and legumes, is needed to complement nutrients needed by livestock. Gliricidia sepium, Calliandra calothyrsus and Indigofera zollingeriana are some of the legumes that can be used as an additional source of protein in silage. This study aimed to determine the effect of adding various legumes in elephant grass silage on digestibility and in-vitro fermentation products. The study used a completely randomize design (CRD), consisting of four treatments and each treatment was repeated four times, so there were 16 experimental units. The treatments given were: P0 (87,5% elephant grass + 10% rice bran + 2,5% molasses), P1 (57,5% elephant grass + 30% Gliricidia sepium + 10% rice bran + 2,5% molasses), P2 (57,5% elephant grass + 30% Calliandra calothyrsus + 10% rice bran + 2,5% molasses), P3 (57,5% elephant grass + 30% Indigofera zollingeriana + 10% rice bran + 2,5% molasses). The observed variables consisted of dry matter digestibility, organic matter digestibility, pH, NH3, and volatile fatty acid (VFA) in-vitro. The results showed no significant difference between pH and N-NH3 values between all treatments. The highest dry matter digestibility, organic matter digestibility, and VFA were obtained in the P3 treatment, which was 69.12%, 70.00%, and 253.33 mMol. Based on the study’s results, adding various legumes in elephant grass silage could improve the digestibility of dry matter, the digestibility of organic matter and VFA of total silage. ABSTRAK Rumput gajah merupakan hijauan pakan yang palatable, memiliki nilai nutrisi yang baik untuk ternak ruminansia dan merupakan bahan pakan hijauan yang baik untuk dibuat silase. Namun, silase yang hanya mengandalkan bahan rerumputan memiliki kandungan protein yang relatif rendah. Pakan hijauan yang merupakan kombinasi rumput dan legum dibutuhkan untuk saling melengkapi unsur nutrien yang diperlukan oleh ternak. Gamal, kaliandra dan Indigofera merupakan beberapa legum yang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk menjadi sumber protein tambahan dalam silase. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan berbagai macam legum dalam silase rumput gajah terhadap kecernaan dan produk fermentasi in-vitro. Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap (RAL), terdiri dari empat perlakuan dan setiap perlakuan diulang sebanyak empat kali, sehingga terdapat 16 unit percobaan. Perlakuan yang diberikan yaitu: P0 (87,5% rumput gajah + 10% dedak padi + 2,5% molases), P1 (57,5% rumput gajah + 30% gamal + 10% dedak padi + 2,5% molases), P2 (57,5% rumput gajah + 30% kaliandra + 10% dedak padi + 2,5% molases), P3 (57,5% rumput gajah + 30% Indigofera zollingeriana + 10% dedak padi + 2,5% molases). Peubah yang diamati terdiri dari kecernaan bahan kering (KcBK), kecernaan bahan organik (KcBO), pH, NH3, dan VFA (vollatile fatty acid) secara in-vitro. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan nilai pH dan N-NH3 tidak terdapat perbedaan yang nyata antar semua perlakuan. KcBK, KcBO dan VFA tertinggi diperoleh pada perlakuan P3 yaitu sebesar 69,12%, 70,00%, dan 253,33 mMol. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian penambahan berbagai macam legum dalam silase rumput gajah dapat meningkatkan kecernaan bahan kering, kecernaan bahan organik dan VFA total silase.

Abstract

Rice straw is an agricultural by-product characterized by high crude fiber content and low crude protein levels, necessitating nutritional enhancement through the addition of protein-rich supplements. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius leaf meal. supplementation on the nutritional composition of rice straw silage. The experiment was conducted at the Sesetan Research Station and the Animal Feed Nutrition Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Science, Udayana University. A completely randomized design (CRD) was applied, consisting of four treatments with four replications, totaling 16 experimental units. The treatments were as follows: P1 (95% rice straw + 5% molasses), P2 (85% rice straw + 10% Cnidoscolus aconitifolius leaf meal + 5% molasses), P3 (75% rice straw + 20% Cnidoscolus aconitifolius leaf meal + 5% molasses), and P4 (65% rice straw + 30% Cnidoscolus aconitifolius leaf meal + 5% molasses). Observed variables included pH, dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), and crude fiber (CF). Statistical analysis revealed that the addition of Cnidoscolus aconitifolius leaf meal decreased the dry matter and crude fiber content, while increasing the organic matter and crude protein content. However, the pH value of the silage was not significantly affected. Treatment P4 yielded the highest crude protein and organic matter content and the lowest crude fiber content. It can be concluded that supplementation with 30% Cnidoscolus aconitifolius leaf meal provided the most favorable improvement in the nutritional quality of rice straw silage. ABSTRAK Jerami padi merupakan limbah pertanian dengan kandungan serat kasar tinggi dan protein kasar rendah, sehingga perlu peningkatan kualitas nutrisi melalui penambahan bahan berprotein tinggi. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penambahan tepung daun pepaya jepang (Cnidoscolus aconitifolius) terhadap kandungan nutrisi silase jerami padi. Penelitian dilaksanakan di Stasiun Penelitian Sesetan dan Laboratorium Nutrisi Pakan Ternak Fakultas Peternakan Universitas Udayana, penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) dengan empat perlakuan dan empat ulangan, perlakuan terdiri atas: P1 (95% jerami padi + 5% molases), P2 (85% jerami padi + 10% daun pepaya jepang + 5% molases), P3 (75% jerami padi + 20% daun pepaya jepang + 5% molases), dan P4 (65% jerami padi + 30% daun pepaya jepang + 5% molases) sehingga terdapat 16 unit percobaan. Variabel yang diamati meliputi pH, bahan kering, bahan organik, protein kasar, dan serat kasar. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penambahan tepung daun pepaya jepang menurunkan kandungan bahan kering dan serat kasar, serta meningkatkan bahan organik dan protein kasar, namun tidak berpengaruh terhadap nilai pH. Perlakuan P4 dengan penambahan 30% daun papaya jepang menunjukkan kandungan protein kasar dan bahan organik tertinggi, serta serat kasar terendah. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa penambahan 30% tepung daun pepaya jepang memberikan hasil terbaik terhadap peningkatan kualitas nutrisi silase jerami padi.
