Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the meristic characteristics of snakehead fish (Channa striata) collected from freshwater ecosystems in Gunungsitoli, North Sumatra Province. The research was conducted from November 2025 to January 2026 using five specimens of snakehead fish as samples. A descriptive quantitative method was applied in this study. The observed meristic characters included the number of dorsal, pectoral, pelvic, anal, and caudal fin rays, as well as the number of lateral line scales, transverse body scales, and scales around the caudal peduncle. Observations were carried out directly in the laboratory using optical instruments to ensure accuracy. The results indicated that the meristic characteristics of Channa striata from Gunungsitoli waters were relatively uniform among individuals, although slight variations were observed in some characters. These variations were still within the normal range and consistent with previously reported descriptions of the species. The relative uniformity of meristic characters suggests that the environmental conditions of the study area support normal growth and development of snakehead fish. The findings of this study are expected to serve as baseline data for fisheries biology studies, resource management, and further research on the population structure of snakehead fish.

Abstract

The snakehead fish business is one of the promising business opportunities in the field of fisheries entrepreneurship. Snakehead fish (Channa striata) is a freshwater fish commodity with high economic value and nutritional content, particularly protein and albumin, which are beneficial for human health. This study aims to analyze the potential of the snakehead fish business from the perspective of fisheries entrepreneurship, covering production aspects, business management, marketing strategies, as well as challenges and development opportunities. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach supported by simple quantitative data. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving snakehead fish business operators. The results indicate that the snakehead fish business has considerable profit potential due to its relatively simple and flexible cultivation system. Product diversification through processing of snakehead fish products was proven to increase added value and business competitiveness. However, several constraints remain, including limited capital, fluctuating feed prices, and insufficient knowledge of business management and marketing. Therefore, innovative development strategies, capacity building for entrepreneurs, and support from relevant stakeholders are necessary to ensure the sustainable development of the snakehead fish business and its contribution to community welfare and the strengthening of the fisheries sector.
