Abstract

Mental health problems are commonly occurring not just in hearing population but also in deaf community. Currently, there is no publication in Indonesia reporting on mental health problems in deaf individuals. This study aims to determine the sociodemographic characteristics, prevalence of mental problems, and relationship between sociodemographic characteristic and mental health problems in deaf community. This research used cross-sectional design with univariate and bivariate analysis. The sample population was obtained in 20 cities across Indonesia with total respondents of 604 based on inclusion criteria. The results of this study showed 401 participants (66.4%) with mental health problems (anxiety/depression) using Self Reporting Questionnaire-20 (SRQ-20). Bivariate analysis showed significant relationship between gender (p<0.05 and mental health problems while other sociodemographic factors did not. 14 out of 20 cities reported more than 50% participants with mental health problems. As conclusion, this study revealed high prevalence of mental health problems in deaf individuals, which is higher compared to normal hearing population, and age may be one factor related to deaf mental health.
