Abstract

This article aims to map the direction, trends, and relevance of the Islamic educational philosophy of Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur) and Nurcholish Madjid (Cak Nur) in the context of contemporary education through a bibliometric approach. Both figures are influential Indonesian Muslim intellectuals who have made significant contributions to developing an inclusive, humanistic, and democratic paradigm of Islamic education. This study employs bibliometric analysis of scholarly publications related to the thoughts of Gus Dur and Cak Nur from academic databases over the past one decade, complemented by a conceptual literature review. The mapping results indicate that Gus Dur’s ideas emphasize pluralism, humanism, and education grounded in humanitarian values, while Cak Nur focuses on rationality, modernization, and openness to science and culture. The dialectic between their ideas reveals a convergence in viewing Islamic education as a means of liberation, empowerment, and the development of a civil society, although with different emphases: Gus Dur prioritizes socio-cultural praxis, whereas Cak Nur highlights epistemological rationality. The integration of their philosophical perspectives remains relevant for shaping the future direction of Islamic education in the era of globalization, which demands openness, tolerance, and innovation, while remaining rooted in Islamic and universal human values.
