Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to describe the level of knowledge of traditional birth attendants (TBAs) regarding delivery assistance according to modern midwifery standards in Longsheng Village, China, an area that still relies on traditional birth practices. Methodology: This study used a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach, involving 42 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were obtained using a validated closed-ended questionnaire, then analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequency distributions and percentages. Main Findings: The results indicate that the level of knowledge of TBAs remains low, with only 21.8% of respondents having good knowledge, while 71.9% did not understand safe birth procedures according to midwifery standards. Knowledge regarding care of the first and second stages of labor tended to be limited to traditional experiences, while understanding of active management of the third and fourth stages of labor was significantly higher. This situation suggests that traditional delivery practices have the potential to increase the risk of complications if not synergized with modern health care standards. Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this study lies in presenting the latest empirical data on the integration of traditional and standard midwifery practices in one Chinese village, as well as providing a scientific basis for the development of a community-based training model to improve delivery safety.
