<![CDATA[This article describes the social actions of the characters in the novel "Gadis Kretek" by Ratih Kumala using Max Weber's theory which explains that human behavior to achieve a goal is influenced by interactions with others. The appropriateness of the meaning of behavior will lead to an understanding of the form of goals desired by each character, such as Idroes Moeria, Dasiyah, Soedjagad, Lebas, Soeraja, Tegar and Roemaisa. The method used is qualitative descriptive with data collection techniques in the form of literature studies. The collected data will be analyzed using Max Weber's theory of social action. The results of this study indicate that the characters in the novel Gadis Kretek carry out four types of social actions, namely instrumental rational, value-oriented social actions, traditional social actions and affective social actions. Keywords: novel; social action; character Abstrak Artikel ini mendeskripsikan tindakan sosial tokoh dalam novel “Gadis Kretek” karya Ratih Kumala menggunakan teori Max Weber yang menjelaskan bahwa perilaku manusia untuk mencapai suatu tujuan dipengaruhi oleh interaksi dengan orang lain. Kesesuaian makna perilaku akan berujung pada pemahaman tentang bentuk tujuan yang diinginkan oleh masing-masing tokoh, seperti Idroes Moeria, Dasiyah, Soedjagad, Lebas, Soeraja, Tegar dan Roemaisa. Metode yang digunakan adalah dekriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa studi pustaka. Data yang sudah terkumpul akan dianalisis menggunakan teori tindakan sosial Max Weber. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa para tokoh dalam novel Gadis Kretek melakukan keempat jenis tindakan sosial yaitu rasional instrumental, tindakan sosial berorientasi nilai, tindakan sosial tradisional dan tindakan sosial afektif.
