Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of the use of slang that is developing on TikTok social media on the narrative writing skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 14 Tangerang. The background of this study is based on the widespread use of non-standard language by adolescents in everyday life, which is indirectly carried over into academic contexts, especially when writing. This study uses a quantitative correlational approach with a survey method in the form of a questionnaire and document analysis in the form of student narrative essays. The research sample consisted of 32 students from grade VIIG. The results showed that the majority of students were active users of slang, both in daily social interactions and in narrative writing. The slang found included types of omissions/replacements of letters, abbreviations, puns, and foreign language vocabulary. Of the 32 narrative essays analyzed, only two of them did not contain slang elements. These findings indicate a significant influence of TikTok slang on students' writing skills, particularly in terms of formality and narrative structure. While slang can enhance students' creativity and self-expression, its presence also poses challenges to mastering formal Indonesian, which is essential in education. This study recommends learning strategies that emphasize contextual awareness of language use so students can distinguish when and how to use appropriate language varieties.
