Abstract

This research aims to examine the effectiveness of CRS strategies in improving reading comprehension skills of the students’ of Politeknik Pelayaran Sulawesi Utara. Using quantitative research through pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test, the data analysis statistically carried out using descriptive analysis and Paired Sample T-test. To find that there is a significant effect of using Collaborative Reading Strategy (CRS), the data will be calculated by using SPSS 25.0 application. The results show that CRS strategies have been proven to be effective in improving students' reading comprehension skills. The CRS strategy used is able to help students develop interest in reading and overcome boredom in the learning process. The implementation of Collaborative Reading Strategy (CRS) strategies has proven to be highly effective in improving the reading comprehension skills of the 2nd semester Nautical students at Politeknik Pelayaran Sulawesi Utara. The study revealed a significant increase in students' comprehension abilities, as evidenced by the substantial rise in mean scores from the pre-test to the post-test. The study confirms that CRS is a valuable tool for improving reading comprehension skills among Nautical students. The significant improvement in scores demonstrates that CRS strategies are well-suited to the needs of students in specialized fields, where understanding complex texts is essential.

Abstract

Creative thinking skills are essential competencies in 21st-century education, essential for addressing the ever-evolving complexity of social, technological, and economic issues. Modern education systems no longer emphasize solely the acquisition of knowledge but also emphasize students' ability to develop new ideas, solve problems innovatively, and generate valuable solutions. One learning model believed to be capable of developing these skills is Problem-Based Learning (PBL). This model places real-world problems as the starting point of learning, encouraging students to explore knowledge, analyze, and develop ideas creatively. This study aims to systematically analyze various research findings examining the effect of the Problem-Based Learning model on students' creative thinking skills. The method used is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) by examining various scientific articles published in national and international journals over the past ten years. The article selection process is carried out through several stages: identification, screening, feasibility assessment, and inclusion based on specific criteria relevant to the research objectives. The results of the study indicate that most of the analyzed studies concluded that the application of the Problem-Based Learning model has a positive influence on improving students' creative thinking skills. This is evident in the improvement in creativity indicators such as fluency (fluency of ideas), flexibility (flexibility of thinking), originality (originality of ideas), and elaboration (development of ideas). Furthermore, PBL can also increase student engagement in the learning process, strengthen collaboration skills, and foster learning independence. The findings of this study imply that the application of Problem-Based Learning can be an effective learning strategy in developing creative thinking skills at various levels of education. Therefore, educators are advised to integrate problem-based learning models into the learning process systematically and contextually.

Abstract

The integration of digital technology into English for Specific Purposes (ESP) instruction has become increasingly important in vocational and professional education. In maritime education, the ability to comprehend technical texts and master specialized vocabulary is essential for effective communication and operational safety. However, many maritime cadets continue to experience difficulties in reading comprehension due to limited vocabulary mastery, low learning motivation, and the predominance of conventional teacher-centered instructional approaches. This study investigated the effectiveness of Kahoot-based gamification in improving maritime cadets’ reading comprehension and technical vocabulary mastery in ESP classes. Employing a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, the study involved 23 third-semester cadets from the Nautical Study Program at North Sulawesi Maritime Polytechnic. Quantitative data were collected through pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires, while qualitative data were obtained through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews. Statistical analysis revealed significant improvements in reading comprehension and maritime vocabulary mastery across three intervention sessions, with all paired-sample t-tests yielding significance levels below .001. Questionnaire results indicated highly positive perceptions regarding the ease of use, usefulness, and motivational impact of Kahoot. Qualitative findings further demonstrated increased engagement, reduced language anxiety, enhanced metacognitive awareness, and stronger peer collaboration. The findings suggest that Kahoot-based gamification provides an effective pedagogical approach for improving ESP reading instruction in maritime education. The study contributes to the growing literature on gamification in vocational ESP contexts and offers practical implications for technology-enhanced maritime language instruction.
