Abstract

This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of educational board game learning media that integrates politeness values in a fun social game context. Using a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group design, this study involved 60 fourth-grade students from a public elementary school in Surabaya who were divided into an experimental group (using a board game) and a control group (conventional method). Data collection instruments in the form of a Likert scale questionnaire, observation sheets, and supporting interviews were used to measure changes in the use of polite language, willingness to help, and empathetic attitudes. The analysis results showed a significant increase in the experimental group in all indicators of social interaction, in contrast to the control group whose increase was not significant. The data also showed that students were more active, reflective, and emotionally involved during the board game play. This suggests that game-based learning media can be a contextual and effective alternative in character education. This study emphasizes the importance of the experiential learning approach in instilling social values in children, by making learning a fun and meaningful experience. Contextually designed board games not only educate but also build social spaces that stimulate empathy, communication, and the habit of respecting others

Abstract

Abstract   Minggirsari Village, Blitar Regency, is vulnerable to hydrometeorological disasters, particularly flooding, due to its proximity to river basins. Low levels of family disaster literacy, particularly in mitigation and preparedness, pose a challenge that potentially increases the risk of casualties during a disaster. This community service project focuses on strengthening family capacity through a community-based disaster literacy mentoring program utilizing the River School as a participatory educational space. The objective of this activity is to increase family knowledge, awareness, and skills in responding to potential disasters independently and sustainably. The community service method uses a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach with participatory education strategies through outreach, disaster mitigation training, evacuation simulations, educational games, and disaster preparedness family mentoring. The community service participants included mothers, children, and the community around the river basin in Minggirsari Village. The results of the community service program indicate an increase in community understanding of disaster warning signs, evacuation routes, and personal and family safety measures. Furthermore, this activity successfully built collective community awareness of the importance of a disaster-aware culture through the active involvement of families and the local community. The River School program also serves as an effective educational tool for strengthening family resilience based on the environment and community.
