Abstract

Diarrhea remains one of the common health problems among school-age children. Handwashing behavior as part of clean and healthy living practices, as well as healthy snack consumption behavior, plays an important role in the prevention of diarrhea. These behaviors can be classified into good, fair, and poor categories based on children’s compliance and habitual practices. To determine the relationship between handwashing behavior and healthy snack consumption with the incidence of diarrhea among students at SDN Tugu Utara 07, North Jakarta. This study employed an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 61 fourth- and fifth-grade students were selected as respondents using stratified random sampling. Handwashing behavior and healthy snack consumption behavior were measured using a questionnaire and categorized into good, fair, and poor, while the incidence of diarrhea was classified as ever and never. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Pearson Chi-Square test at a significance level of α = 0.05. The univariate analysis showed that the majority of respondents had handwashing behavior in the fair category, accounting for 41 respondents (67.2%). The bivariate analysis revealed a significant association between handwashing behavior and the incidence of diarrhea (p-value = 0.019), with the highest proportion of diarrhea found among respondents with fair handwashing behavior (56.1%). In addition, there was a significant association between healthy snack consumption behavior and the incidence of diarrhea (p-value = 0.030), with the highest proportion of diarrhea occurring in the poor healthy snack consumption category (62.5%). There is a significant relationship between handwashing behavior and healthy snack consumption behavior with the incidence of diarrhea among school-age children. Therefore, strengthening health education regarding proper handwashing practices and the selection of healthy snacks is necessary as a preventive measure against diarrhea in elementary school children.
