Abstract

The purpose is to determine the extent of the relationship between academic procrastination and pessimism of Guidance and Counseling students at Sjech M. Djamil Djambek Bukitinggi State Islamic University in completing their thesis. In addition, it aims to determine the extent of the relationship between pessimism and academic procrastination among orientation and mentoring students. The research was motivated by the phenomenon that occurred in the field that many students seemed to procrastinate in working on the thesis so that the making became slow, delaying the task because it was more fun to watch TV, chat, take a walk or listen to music. In addition, there are a number of phenomena related to pessimism, pessimistic students often feel inferior, are too dependent on others, and have a bleaker outlook on life. Pessimism is someone with a less optimistic or worried behavior or outlook. The quantitative correlational method was used in this study. 160 students from the 2019-2020 promotion participated. Probability sampling was used to take a sample of 40 students. Data processing through coding, scoring, and tabulation. The data analysis technique used the coefficient of determination to determine the relationship between pessimism and academic procrastination, which is 0.141%. This can be seen after knowing the relationship between the two variables. Based on the analysis of the coefficient of determination to determine how much the relationship between pessimism and academic procrastination with R² of 0.141 shows that the proportion of the pessimism variable relationship is 14.1% while the remaining (100-14.1) is 85.9% influenced by variables not examined in this study.
