Abstract

This study aims to increase the reading interest of sixth-grade students at SDN 064960 Medan through the application of the Think-Pair-Share method using short text materials. Think-Pair-Share is a cooperative learning model that encourages students to think individually, discuss in pairs, and share their discussion results in groups, thereby enhancing student engagement and motivation. The research employed a classroom action research method conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection phases. The subjects were sixth-grade students participating in Indonesian language learning with short text materials. Data were collected through observation, reading interest questionnaires, and comprehension tests before and after the method's application. The results showed a significant increase in students' reading interest after applying the Think-Pair-Share method. In the first cycle, students' reading interest improved from less active to moderately active, and in the second cycle, it rose to active and very active levels. Additionally, students' comprehension of short texts also improved significantly. The method successfully created an interactive and collaborative learning environment, motivating students to read and discuss more actively. The study implies the importance of using learning methods that involve social interaction and cooperation among students to boost reading interest. It is recommended that teachers routinely integrate Think-Pair-Share into reading lessons and provide engaging reading materials appropriate to students’ abilities. Consequently, students’ reading interest can continue to improve, positively impacting their overall academic achievement. This research offers practical contributions to developing effective learning strategies to enhance reading interest at the elementary school level.
