Abstract

Writing is one of the language skills that is considered complex, as it is not merely an end product but also involves a process of developing ideas, thoughts, and imagination expressed through written form. However, students’ writing abilities, particularly in composing simple essays, remain relatively low. The main problems encountered include difficulties in determining a title, organizing essay content, maintaining neat handwriting, and using proper capitalization and punctuation. This study aims to analyze the difficulties experienced by third - grade students at SDN 2 Setiamulya in writing simple essays. This research employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The study subjects consisted of five students with varying levels of writing proficiency. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, tests, and documentation. The results show that the most dominant difficulties faced by the students were in the use of capital letters (S1, S2, S3, and S4), incoherent essay content (S1, S2, and S3), and writing neatness (S1, S3, and S4), as indicated by visible erasures and messy handwriting. Additionally, students such as S1 also had difficulty choosing a title that matched the theme. The factors contributing to these difficulties originated from internal factors, such as low reading interest and limited vocabulary, and external factors, such as lack of family support and limited use of instructional media that support writing skills.
