Abstract

Educational autonomy provides space for schools to develop character-strengthening and literacy programs tailored to local needs. This article analyzes the implementation of extracurricular singing and storytelling activities as strategies for character and literacy development at SDN 16 Batang Gasan. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach with a policy case study design. Data were analyzed using a standards-based policy evaluation framework (utility, feasibility, accuracy, propriety) as well as the concepts of educational decentralization and School-Based Management. The findings show that school autonomy enables the development of arts programs that are relevant to students’ characteristics and the needs of the school. The extracurricular activities were found to enhance students’ self-confidence, oral communication skills, and narrative literacy; however, challenges remain regarding the competence of guiding teachers and the availability of supporting facilities. This article affirms that the implementation of educational autonomy at the primary school level can serve as a strategic instrument for strengthening character and literacy, provided it is supported by structured planning, community collaboration, and continuous evaluation. Keywords: educational autonomy, literacy, character, school policy, arts extracurricular activities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication and emotional skills practiced by educators in the learning context at UPT SDN 01 Lunang. Using a qualitative–descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, non-participant observations, and a review of learning documents. Thematic analysis was employed to identify patterns of communicative interaction and emotional management strategies used by teachers in responding to classroom dynamics. The findings show that teachers’ communication skills are reflected in their use of language appropriate to children’s cognitive development, the application of open-ended questioning techniques, active listening abilities, and the provision of constructive feedback. Meanwhile, emotional skills are evident in teachers’ capacity to regulate their own emotions, understand students’ emotional states, maintain emotional stability during challenging classroom situations, and demonstrate empathy toward learners. The study highlights that effective pedagogical communication and well-developed emotional intelligence contribute directly to creating a positive, safe, and supportive learning climate for primary school students. It recommends structured, reflection-based training to continuously enhance teachers’ communication competencies and emotional intelligence.

Abstract

This study aims to describe how teachers at Betha Plus Elementary School interpret the essence of students as human beings and to examine how this understanding is reflected in their daily pedagogical practices. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed to explore the construction of meaning and its implementation within the primary school context. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis, then analyzed using thematic analysis techniques. The findings indicate that teachers view students as multidimensional individuals who possess cognitive, emotional, moral, spiritual, and social aspects. This interpretation is shaped by humanistic, existential, behavioristic, psychoanalytic perspectives, and the values of Pancasila. The manifestation of these understandings can be seen in empathetic attitudes, differentiated learning strategies, sensitivity to students’ emotional conditions, structured yet flexible classroom management, holistic assessment, and value-based character education practices. This study highlights that teachers’ understanding of the essence of humanity plays a crucial role in shaping a humanistic and holistic approach to primary education.
