Abstract

This study analyses the role of the West Kalimantan Provincial Library and Archives Office in preserving local language books as part of preserving local cultural identity. The background of this study is based on the low number of local language collections in local archives, although the total deposit collection continues to increase. The research method used a descriptive qualitative approach through in-depth interviews with department employees, cultural figures, and direct observation of the collection management process. Data analysis was conducted through reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing, with validation using triangulation of methods and sources. The results showed that the agency's role includes collection procurement through APBD funds, maintenance, and preservation, but the focus on local languages is still incidental. The main challenges include limited budget, human resources, technology, and the lack of affirmative policies related to regional language preservation. This research recommends strengthening policies, increasing budgets, community partnerships, technical training for librarians, and digitisation of collections. The findings are expected to serve as a reference for local language preservation strategies in Indonesian local libraries.
