Abstract

This article discusses the Ubrug Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) in Sukabumi which was constructed as part of the development of Dutch irrigation engineering and the modernization of the colony as an implementation of the Ethical Policy in the early 20th century. The Ubrug hydropower plant has been planned since 1917 for electricity needs in Batavia and its surroundings, Buitenzorg, and Sukabumi. Construction began in 1918 and became operational in 1925. This research focuses on the construction of the Ubrug Hydropower Plant and its function in the context of the development of colonialism in the Dutch East Indies in the early 20th century in the period 1917-1925. This research uses historical methods consisting of heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography. This research shows that the construction of the Ubrug hydropower plant cannot be separated from the context of the historical development of irrigation engineering and Ethical Policy, as well as an effort to modernize the Dutch East Indies, especially for the electrification of railway lines.

Abstract

This article examines the modern colonial architecture of Nieuwe Bouwen in Bandung through the works of Albert Frederik Aalbers from 1931 to 1942. A.F. Aalbers was a prominent architect in the Netherlands East Indies who contributed to the development of modern architecture through his works influenced by the international movement and Nieuwe Bouwen from Netherlands. He wass notable for his distinctive architectural style, which include the DENIS Bank, Savoy Homann Hotel, the renovation of Societeit Concordia, and villas such as De Locomotieven, De Driekleur, and Sadangsari. Bandung, one of the cities developed in colonial times, preserves many colonial buildings with diverse styles, providing evidence of the history of architectural development in Indonesia, and among them are Albers’ architectural works. His architectural works are significant in the history of Indonesian colonial architecture because his expressionist design, influenced by international architectural styles, were integrated into the urban planning of Netherlands East Indies. This research is a study of colonial architecture using historical methods consisting of heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography.
