Abstract

The rise of China can be perceived either as a threat or as an opportunity to and for the US, mostly depending on US grand foreign policy interests and its related strategies. If the US feels comfortable living in a multipolar world in which it is considered to be an equal among the major powers, China is more likely to be perceived as a partner. However, if the goal of US foreign policy is to strengthen its position as the sole superpower or even as a hyper-power, and does not choose to recognise other major countries, then the rise of China will be perceived as a threat. Based on this underlying assumption, this article seeks to examine the exact interests of the US: Is it threatened by the rise of China or is it not? This article starts by explaining the grand theories and relating it to the research question. The next explanation examines the economic ties between the two countries. The final consideration is the possibility of military conflict given several recent occurrences, such as the Taiwan and South China Sea (SCS) dispute. This article concludes that the rise of China will threaten the interests of the US. However, it will not necessarily lead to war between them.

Abstract

As the COVID-19 crisis emerged, many forms of nationalism have been rising, such as racism, state individualism, vaccine nationalism, and so forth. However, this kind of nationalism cannot solve the global pandemic that affects various aspects of human life that needs global solidarity in the framework of thinking. The purpose of this article is to explore the relationship between COVID-19, nationalism, and global solidarity. This article used the literature review method to compare and contrast the COVID-19, Nationalism, and Global Solidarity arguments by using reputable resources such as journals, research reports, and news articles. This article was divided into three sections: 1) the explanation about nationalism, its definition, and theoretical approach, 2) state and nationalism in crisis time, 3) cooperation and global solidarity. It concluded that the COVID-19 period showed us people tend to have greater individuality and higher attachment to their groups and state, as Social Identity Theory (SIT) suggests. It manifested in state nationalist view that state as the sole player in mitigating this pandemic shows selfish attitude. However, as the COVID-19 served as a global pandemic, it also needs global solidarity which has been proven in solving the spread of coronavirus and tackle its impact.

Abstract

As a new principle in the world, Responsibility to Protect (R2P) is an obligation on the part of the international community and on the part of the states to protect civilians from mass atrocities by doing several actions like giving international aids, reducing poverty, supporting peacebuilding, educating the population, until military intervention. However, military intervention under R2P norm in Libya produce a counterproductive result which then led the country into civil war. From this background, therefore, the purpose of this article is to examine the implementation of R2P in Libya into four types of lessons learned. The first lesson, R2P is corrupted by great powers that make the military intervention far from its mandate. The second lesson is the inconsistency practice from an R2P military intervention which led to the question of credibility of military intervention in Libya. The third lesson is diplomacy must be prioritized rather than military intervention since that there is an R2P success story without military intervention. The last is the recommendation to implement Responsibility while Protecting (RWP) principle in the R2P framework.Keywords: Responsibility to Protect (R2P), Libya, Diplomacy, Military Intervention, Responsibility while Protecting

Abstract

Coronavirus Diseases (COVID-19) in Italy was remarkably immense, with more than two hundred thousand infected cases, and more than thirty thousand people had died because of the virus as of 27th July 2020. The high number of mortality rate makes the Italy case is essential to be further explored. This article aims to elaborate on government response and strategy in handling COVID-19 that spread within the country. This article unfolds in four sections; the first part discusses how COVID-19 could spread massively in Italy and cause death for a thousand people. The second part explains the government measure and its effectivity in containing the virus. The third part elaborates on the impact of COVID-19 along with the government response in the socio-economic aspect. The last part explores the future of Italy after COVID-19. The article employs a literature review that analyzes information from various sources such as academic journals, research reports from the think tank, and news media outlets. Keywords: Coronavirus, Italy, Government, Response Kasus coronavirus di Italia sangat tinggi dan massif dengan lebih dari dua ratus ribu orang terinfeksi dan lebih dari lima puluh ribu orang meninggal pertanggal 27 Juli 2020. Tingginya jumlah orang yang terinfeksi dan jumlah orang yang meninggal membuat Italia menjadi kasus yang menarik untuk dibahas. Tujuan dari artikel ini untuk mengelaborasi tentang bagaimana respon dan strategi pemerintah Italia dalam menangani virus yang sudah menyebar di Italia. Artikel ini terdiri dari empat bahasan, pertama membahas tentang awal mula COVID-19 bisa menyebar secara masif di Italia dan mengakibatkan puluhan ribu orang meninggal. Kedua, membahas tentang bagaimana respon dari pemerintah Italia dan juga efektifitasnya dalam menangani penyebaran virus ini. Ketiga, membahas tentang dampak yang diakibatkan dari COVID-19 beserta respon pemerintah terhadap aspek sosio-ekonomi di Italia. Keempat, mendiskusikan bagaimana masa depan Italia setelah COVID-19. Artikel ini menggunakan tinjauan pustaka untuk melakukan analisis terkait dengan topik artikel yang berasal dari banyak sumber seperti jurnal akademis, laporan peneltian, artikel berita dan lain sebagainya.  Kata-kata Kunci: Coronavirus, Italia, Pemerintah, Respons

Abstract

The infodemic phenomenon has become one of the biggest challenges in dealing with COVID-19. This is because there is a lot of disinformation and misinformation that widespread in the community. Various hoaxes about COVID-19 have caused anxiety and fear. Therefore, this community service activity aims to provide socialization related to digital literacy to the community, so that they are able to handle the current infodemic. The target of community is members of Family Empowerment and Welfare (PKK) in Desa Karangrejo, Kecamatan Manyar, Kabupaten Gresik. This is because women are easy targets for irresponsible parties in spreading hoaxes. The method used is divided into three stages which include planning, implementation, and evaluation. In the process, socialization was held through Zoom Meetings and re-broadcast via Youtube. Pre-test and post-test were also conducted online by distributing questionnaires via google forms. This community service activity resulted that in the pre-test stage, there were still many people who received hoaxes regarding COVID-19. It causes the community became enthusiastic to participating in the socialization activity. In the sessions of interactive discussion, the community was more active in asking several questions about personal issues or general issues that popular today. Indeed, the post-test results then showed that all PKK’s members agreed that the socialization activities has provided a lot of knowledge and benefits to them. It because the speakers explained their clarifications on various hoaxes regarding COVID-19. They also provided training to the members regarding the proper steps to conduct fact checking about several informations.

Abstract

Ease of access to information is a definite consequence of the deepening of globalization. Mode of interaction and communication advancement are characteristic that can now be easily recognized through technological developments. This raise a problem related to less optimum usage of the internet amid the high use of digital applications. The existing conditions lead to a lack of people's ability to both understand digital objects and the benefits that is contained. The implementation of community service in partnership with Kampoeng Djoeang aims to introduce and upload social resources related to digital literacy skills which are now crucial in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic. The method used is a series of training in three stages, namely (1) analysis of community needs, (2) socialization of digital literacy, and (3) evaluation and feedback. It was found that practical forms of training were the answer to two people's needs, namely (1) digital literacy education by providing information analysis skills and (2) understanding legal and ethical references in social media.

Abstract

Of all the inter-state conflict currently happening in different regions of the world, the Israel- Palestine conflict has stood the test of time to become one of the longest and most impactful. Despite numerous attempts to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, both parties have persisted, mainly showing a lack of compromise and commitment. This paper aims to analyze the underlying reason to the various unsuccessful attempts of Israel-Palestine conflict resolutions. This paper argues that there are four core issues that become object of negotiation in each attempt: borders, security, Jerusalem, and refugees. This paper assesses each party’s stances on these four issues and how they shape the negotiation process. This is done through an empirical generalization by inductive methodology, using library studies as a data collection method. This paper concludes that there should be an ideational change to compromise within the domestic politics of both parties to make future conflict resolution possible.

Abstract

Menulis merupakan kegiatan yang dapat menjadi kemampuan mendasar dari siswa untuk meningkatkan prestasi dan bertahan di dunia akademis yang menuntut tiap insannya untuk memiliki produk gagasan. Beragam jenis tulisan seperti artikel populer dan ilmiah keduanya memiliki dampak dan tujuan tertentu yang disasar. Secara konseptual, teknik penulisan ilmiah dan populer memiliki perbedaan. Problematika utama dari generasi Z saat ini adalah kurangnya membaca yang mana perlu media berupa kegiatan penulisan agar kemudian menjadi pemicu untuk membaca buku dan referensi lain yang dapat memperkaya khazanah pengetahuan. Adapun tujuan dari pengabdian kepada masyarakat dilakukan dalam rangka pengembangan kapasitas siswa agar dapat siap menghadapi dunia perkuliahan sekaligus meningkatkan minat baca yang dapat dimotivasi apabila membiasakan diri menulis dengan sumber yang relevan. Lokasi sekaligus mitra dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat adalah SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pituruh, Purworejo yang sejauh ini telah mengembangkan pendidikan pesantren. Metode yang digunakan adalah ceramah tatap muka dan membuka kesempatan pada sesi diskusi kelompok terpumpun agar dapat memetakan minat baca sekaligus minat menulis dari siswa. Hasil daripada pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini mengindikasikan siswa SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Pituruh tertarik untuk mengembangkan gagasan dan pemikirannya ke dalam tulisan hingga termotivasi untuk masuk ke perguruan tinggi.
