Abstract

This study aims to explore secondary and high school students' attitudes towards artificial intelligence (AI) in affective, behavioural, and cognitive dimensions and to analyse the relationships between these attitudes using multilevel and structural equation modeling. The study was conducted with quantitative data obtained from 702 students and 8 English as a Foreign Language teachers. Multilevel models were constructed considering students' gender, grade level, previous use of AI, and teacher-related classroom effects. The findings demonstrated that students who had previously used AI exhibited more positive attitudes in all attitude dimensions. In addition, cognitive attitudes significantly predicted affective attitudes, affective attitudes significantly predicted behavioural attitudes, and affective attitudes played a partial mediating role in this relationship. Although the teacher effect was limited, it provided a significant contribution to the model. These results reveal that students' attitudes towards AI are influenced not only by individual but also by contextual factors, and emphasize that strategic planning for AI integration in educational environments needs to be designed by considering multilevel structures.­­­­­

Abstract

Reading is an essential part of the language learning process that enables students to obtain. information and to expand their language knowledge. In the current era of technology, there is a need for learning media that is interesting and effective to improve students’ reading comprehension. Flipbook as one of digital learning media provides many advantages to implement. This study aimed (1) to explain how the use of Flipbook can improve students’ reading comprehension skills and (2) to analyze the changes in students’ reading comprehension after the implementation of Flipbook. Utilizing a cyclical Classroom Action Research (CAR) model, the research was conducted over two cycles involving planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research participants were 31 nineth grade students of junior high school. The data were collected and analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. The findings demonstrated positive improvement in students’ reading comprehension and engagement after the implementation of Flipbook. Cycle 1 showed that the students felt easier to understand the text using Flipbook. It helped students to visualize the story. Whereas in cycle 2, the positive aspects were identified. Students had better comprehension in reading text on Flipbook. The implementation in cycle 2 was better because it had well-preparation and the text was adjusted to the students’ need and level. This study concluded that Flipbook is an interactive and effective tool to improve reading comprehension in junior high school.

Abstract

A collaborative project involving two universities was initiated to support lecturers in Indonesia in designing English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instruction adjusted to local needs and the latest advancements in EAP. Using a mixed-methods approach and developmental research design, the study included a needs analysis, implementation of an EAP professional learning program, and a program evaluation survey. Needs analysis was conducted through a survey with 88 lecturers and 618 students from 41 universities in Indonesia. The results of the need analysis were then used to inform the design and delivery of an online professional development program for EAP lecturers. Based on the needs analysis results, the EAP lecturers who participated in the survey conveyed that they required improvements in digital skills, teaching techniques for diverse proficiency levels, and methods for improving students productive skills and critical thinking abilities. The participating students also expressed their need for interactive EAP activities, team-based learning, and the use of social media for collaboration and connectivity. Informed by the needs analysis results, a two-month program was designed and delivered in eight 90-minute video conferences, combined with asynchronous activities on a learning platform. As revealed in the post-program survey, the participating lecturers feedback on the program highlighted contributing factors to the changes in their technological and pedagogical content knowledge, particularly in the areas of using digital tools and differentiated instruction in EAP. This study highlights the need for continuous professional development to enhance EAP lecturers ability to effectively apply acquired skills in teaching and professional practice.
