Abstract

Emerging adulthood is a crucial period in the development of romantic relationships, characterized by exploration in building more intimate and meaningful connections. However, not all individuals engage in romantic relationships adaptively, as evidenced by the increasing prevalence of toxic relationships. This indicates that romantic involvement does not always reflect the ability to establish healthy relationship. Romantic competence becomes essential as it encompasses the skills to understand, manage, and maintain romantic relationships in an adaptive way. Family functioning serves as a key factor in the development of romantic competence, as it is the first environment where individuals learn interaction patterns and interpersonal relations. This study aims to examine the relationship between family functioning and romantic competence among emerging adults. This study uses a correlational quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. The participants consisted of 198 emerging adults aged 18–25 years, selected through purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected using the Family Assessment Device (FAD) to measure family functioning and the Inventory of Romantic Relationship Competence (IRRC) to measure romantic competence. Data analysis was conducted using Spearman's correlation test with IBM SPSS 27. The results revealed a positive and significant relationship between family functioning and romantic competence (r = 0.417, p < 0.001). This finding interprets that higher levels of family functioning are associated with a greater ability to engage in adaptive romantic relationships. Overall, the findings suggest that the quality of family relationships serves as a “blueprint” for the interaction patterns individuals develop in their romantic relationships during early adulthood.

Abstract

Student independence is an important psychosocial developmental aspect that supports academic adjustment and preparation for adult life. However, factors associated with student independence require further empirical investigation, particularly in the Indonesian context. This study aimed to examine the relationship between democratic parenting style and student independence, as well as differences in student independence based on socioeconomic status. This study employed a quantitative approach with a cross-sectional design. Participants were 200 active male and female university students in Indonesia aged 18–25 years. Data were collected using Likert-scale instruments to measure democratic parenting style and student independence, while socioeconomic status was assessed based on family income classification from the Central Statistics Agency o Indonesia. Data were analyzed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation, Kruskal–Wallis test, and Mann–Whitney U test. The results showed a significant positive relationship between democratic parenting style and student independence (ρ=.326, p<.001). Meanwhile, socioeconomic status did not show significant differences in student independence across groups (p=.990). These findings suggest that democratic parenting style is associated with higher levels of student independence, whereas socioeconomic conditions alone may not sufficiently explain variations in student independence. The findings highlight the importance of improving parenting quality through democratic parenting practices, including open communication, emotional support, and providing opportunities for children to participate in decision-making processes.

Abstract

Adolescence is a crucial transitional period leading into adulthood. Adolescents, especially those in vulnerable socioeconomic circumstances, tend to experience challenges related to self-regulation. A program focused on strengthening self-regulation and future planning was implemented to improve discipline and motivation to learn among adolescent beneficiaries at the Wira Adhi Karya Social Service Center. These activities aim to help participants recognize their potential, develop plans, and manage their emotions more adaptively. The methods used include psychoeducation, interactive discussions, educational games, and reflection sessions involving 20 participants. The program was implemented through two main activities: PATHFINDER: Discovering Direction and Designing the Future, and Emotion Smart: Recognize–Control–Express. The program’s effectiveness was evaluated through post-activity interviews to assess participants’ understanding. The results showed an increase in participants’ understanding of how to recognize their own potential, set future goals, and understand emotion management strategies. The program proved effective in increasing participants’ active engagement in self-regulation and motivation, as well as providing practical insights into self-regulation. However, ongoing support remains necessary to ensure participants can consistently apply these skills in their daily lives.
