Abstract

The development of social media over the past twenty years has changed the way society forms, interprets, and disseminates information, including on socio-religious issues. The case of the Malikal Mulki Mosque in Bogor illustrates how the digital space plays an important role in shaping public awareness. This study aims to explore how social media shapes public perception of the dispute, examine the meaning constructed by users through digital interactions, and identify how the dynamics of digital space influence the formation of moral and social awareness in society. A qualitative approach using phenomenological methods is employed to understand the subjective experiences of netizens and the meaning-making processes that emerge in online discourse. Data was collected through virtual observation of posts, comments, and conversations on various platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, then analyzed through stages of reduction, coding, and qualitative interpretation. Research findings show that social media functions as a digital public space that allows people to openly express their emotions, moral values, and views. In the early stages, the discourse was dominated by sentiments of empathy and religious solidarity. As alternative narratives emerged and clarification efforts were made, the public response became more critical, reflective, and focused on evaluating the legal and ethical aspects, as well as the transparency of donation management.  Thus, social media does not merely function as a medium for distributing information, but also as an arena for the production of meaning and the process of shaping public awareness that continues to evolve in network-based societies.

Abstract

This study investigates the representation of religious values in Panji Sakti’s song “TanpaAku” as a contemporary manifesting of spiritual expression within popular media. Employing a qualitiative approach, the research utilizes Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework to analyze denotative and connotative meanings in the lyrics, and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to examine how religious meanings are encoded by the creator and decoded by audiences. The analysis reveals that the song articulates core Islamic spiritual themes such as surrender to the Divine, the dissolution of ego, spiritual longing (mahabbah), and the human journey toward transcendence. These meanings are communicated through symbolic diction, metaphors, and acoustic aesthetics that enable a reflective, non-dogmatic mode of religious communication. Audience reception on digital platforms demonstrates predominantly dominant-hegemonic readings, indicating alighnment between the intended spiritual message and public interpretation. The findings affirm that popular music can function as an effective medium of contemporary dakwah, illustrating the mediatisation of religion whereby spiritual discourse is recontextualized through culture and digital forms. This study contributes to the understanding of how religious meaning is produced, represented, and internalized within the ecology of modern media.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital media has fundamentally transformed the landscape of religious communication, particularly in Muslim-majority societies. The emergence of short-form video platforms such as YouTube Shorts has raised critical questions about how religious messages are constructed, distributed, and received in algorithmically-driven digital environments, and how traditional religious authority is renegotiated in the process. This study aims to analyze the transformation of religious messages and authority in YouTube Shorts-based da’wah content as part of the broader phenomenon of digital religious communication. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study design to explore in depth the discursive practices and meaning construction within digital spaces. Data were collected through non-participant observation of YouTube Shorts content, semi-structured interviews with digital da’wah creators and audiences, and documentation including content metadata and user interactions. Informants were selected using purposive and snowball sampling techniques based on relevance and level of engagement in producing or consuming religious content. The findings reveal four main themes: (1) simplification and fragmentation of religious messages due to time constraints, (2) the dominance of algorithms in shaping content visibility and structure, (3) the shift of religious authority from knowledge-based legitimacy to digital popularity, and (4) audience interactivity in constructing collective meaning through comment sections. These findings indicate that digital media not only functions as a medium of dissemination but also actively shapes how religious messages are produced, distributed, and interpreted. In conclusion, this study highlights that the transformation of religious communication in the digital era contributes theoretically to strengthening the concepts of digital religion and mediatization, while offering practical implications for adaptive yet substantive da’wah strategies. The study also recommends enhancing digital religious literacy and conducting further cross-platform research to deepen understanding of religious dynamics in the new media era.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes how online news media frame and set the agenda on the issue of house of worship rejection in Bekasi. The research aims to understand how media construct meanings and shape public perception of religious tolerance in a multicultural society. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with content analysis, data were obtained from online articles of Detik.com, Liputan6.com, Tirto.id, and GerakanPIS.id. The findings reveal that national media emphasize administrative clarification and reconciliation, while alternative media highlight constitutional rights and social justice. Through the combination of framing and agenda-setting analysis, this study concludes that media play a dual role as a manager of public issues and a moral agent in shaping narratives of tolerance. The results contribute to the development of peace journalism in reporting religious conflicts in contemporary Indonesia.

Abstract

Religious digitalization has shifted the dawah stage from traditional pulpits to visual-interactive platforms mediated by algorithms. This study aims to analyze how the mechanisms of Filter Bubbles and Echo Chambers on Instagram social media shape Indonesian netizens' public opinion, specifically in responding to moral scandals involving religious authorities in Pati Regency. Using a qualitative research method with a netnographic approach, the researcher conducted passive observation (lurking) of organic interactions in Instagram comment columns. The results show that the Instagram algorithm creates information isolation that reinforces confirmation bias among loyalists, but simultaneously triggers destructive polarization when the scandal penetrates public information bubbles. These findings identify four dominant narrative typologies: institutional delegitimization, dogmatic sarcasm, negative generalization, and demands for mass justice. This study concludes that digital dawah under algorithmic control creates new vulnerabilities for religious authorities, where radical social media transparency can instantly collapse institutional reputation through the phenomenon of Cyber-Balkanization.

Abstract

In this modern era, da'wah is often exploited for material gain. Da'wah activities should be used to disseminate Islamic values to its adherents, as the saying "Ballighu 'aani Walau ayat" (convey even one verse). This is different from the religious command, this study aims to analyze the phenomenon of commodification and mediatization of religion in the television da'wah programs Wisata Hati and Islam Itu Indah (Islam Itu Indah). Using qualitative methods through literature study and digital observation, this study utilizes Vincent Mosco's Commodification theory and Stig Hjarvard and Stewart Hoover's Mediatization of Religion theory to understand the dynamics of da'wah message production in the media. The results of the study indicate that both programs underwent a commodification process that included the commodification of content, the commodification of audiences, and the commodification of preaching figures, where spiritual values were processed according to market and broadcasting industry demands. Furthermore, mediatization was seen through message visualization, content segmentation, personalization of ustadz figures, and the integration of entertainment elements that formed a new, more emotive and popular religiosity. The important findings of this study formulated the concept of Hybrid Da'wah, namely a da'wah model born from the negotiation between the sacredness of teachings and the rationality of the media industry. This concept shows the paradox between expanding access to da'wah and the potential for simplifying spiritual meaning. This research contributes to the study of religious communication in the context of modern media culture in Indonesia.
