Abstract

Abstract

Waste management has become one of the main challenges in achieving sustainable tourism, especially in destinations that heavily depend on environmental quality such as Bali. The increase in population, economic activities, and tourist arrivals has led to a growing volume of waste in Bali, while waste management capacity has not yet been fully optimized. This condition has affected environmental quality, reduced tourist comfort, and weakened Bali’s image as a leading tourist destination. This study aims to analyze the impact of waste problems on the sustainability of tourism in Bali, identify the factors causing high waste generation in tourism areas, and examine waste management efforts that can be carried out by various stakeholders. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through literature review and limited field observation. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that waste problems in Bali not only damage environmental quality, particularly in coastal areas and tourist destinations, but also affect destination attractiveness, tourist comfort, and the economic sustainability of tourism. The high volume of waste is influenced by household activities, the growth of the tourism industry, the use of single-use plastics, and the low awareness of some communities and tourists regarding waste management. Therefore, integrated waste management through stronger government policies, the implementation of 3R principles (reduce, reuse, recycle), the use of waste processing technology, and active collaboration among government, communities, tourism industry actors, and tourists is an essential prerequisite for supporting sustainable tourism in Bali
