Abstract

Hearing loss can cause communication disorders, social isolation, emotional disorders, depression, and anxiety. Cochlear implant hearing technology is an effective solution for severe to profound hearing loss. The study aimed to evaluate the benefits of using cochlear implants through measuring hearing thresholds and Categorical Auditory Performance II (CAP II) scores, before and after 6 months and 1 year of cochlear implant use. Using a mixed methods design with a pre- and post-group approach, with a sample of 60 cochlear implant users over 6 months with specified criteria. Data were obtained from the CMS database, interviews, and questionnaires. Statistical analysis included the Friedman test, Wilcoxon test, and multiple linear regression. There was a significant increase in hearing thresholds from an average of 104.42 dB before implantation to 48.42 dB after 6 months and 33.33 dB after 1 year of use (p < 0.05). The CAP II score also increased from an average of 0.57 to 3.08 (6 months) and 4.82 (1 year). Age, initial test results, and therapy consistency influenced the final outcome. Thus, it is concluded that age, consistent use of cochlear implants and accompanied by verbal/speech auditory therapy have been proven to improve the hearing and auditory abilities of patients with severe to profound hearing loss.
