Abstract

This study examines the interpretation of la'nat (curse/condemnation) in QS Al-Baqarah verse 161 through a comparative analysis of two authoritative classical exegetical works: Tafsir Jami' Al-Bayan fi Ta'wil Al-Qur'an by Imam Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Thabari and Al-Jami' Li Ahkam Al-Qur'an by Imam Abu Abdillah Muhammad al-Qurthubi. The central problematic concerns how each mufassir conceptualizes and articulates la'nat a term that appears 41 times across 36 verses and 18 surahs of the Quran specifically as it relates to those who die in a state of disbelief. Employing a library research design with the muqaran(comparative) methodology, the studyrelies primarily onthe two tafsir works as main sources, supplemented by relevant secondary literature. The findings reveal meaningful interpretive distinctions: Ath-Thabari understands la'nat from Allah as the banishment from divine mercy, while la'nat from the angels and humanity is interpreted as a collective supplication invoking divine punishment upon wrongdoers; Al-Qurthubi, by contrast, frames la'nat as a manifestation of divine condemnation accompanying death in disbelief, with la'nat from the angels and people constituting an expression of righteous indignation against kufr. Despite these differences, both scholars converge on the point that la'nat from the angels and humanity functions as a verbal act either prayer or declaration directed against those who transgress divine law. The study concludes that the two classical commentators, though separated by centuries and different geographic and intellectual contexts, arrive at a shared fundamental conviction that dying in a state of disbelief carries grave and irreversible spiritual consequences.

Abstract

This study explores the vow (nadzar) as a concrete expression of a woman's character and faith in forming a Rabbani (divine) family, through an analytical interpretation of Surah Āli 'Imrān, verse 35. In modern times, women's roles within the household are often overlooked or separated from their spiritual essence. Using a library research method combined with a socio-literary (Adabi Ijtima'i) approach, the study reveals that a vow is more than just a traditional promise or a matter of Islamic law (fiqh); it reflects a mother's visionary nature and genuine heart. The findings show that when Hannah dedicated her unborn child as muharraran (consecrated for worship), her sincerity attracted direct blessings from Allah SWT (anbatahā nabātan ḥasanan). As a result, Maryam was raised in a sacred space (mihrab) under the care of Prophet Zakariya. The study concludes that the vow made by Imran's wife is fundamentally an expression of women's spiritual taqarrub (closeness) to Allah—a voluntary act motivated not by legal requirements but by heartfelt spiritual longing. Moreover, women's role in establishing a Rabbani family foundation is realized through ongoing prayer and spiritual hope for the child's righteousness, beginning well before birth.

Abstract

Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ) is a religious activity that plays an important role in improving Qur’anic recitation skills while fostering children's interest in learning the Qur’an. This study aimed to analyze the implementation of MTQ, identify its supporting and inhibiting factors, and examine its impact on improving the Qur’anic recitation abilities of children in Muara Potan Village, Kota Nopan District. The study employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation and analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing techniques. The findings indicate that the implementation of MTQ successfully enhanced children's interest, motivation, and Qur’anic recitation skills, as reflected by the increasing number of participants and the improvement in recitation quality over the years. The program's success was supported by strong collaboration among MDA teachers, community members, youth organizations, and parents. However, several challenges were identified, including limited funding, participant management, and reduced participation during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, MTQ serves as an effective religious education program for strengthening children's Qur’anic reading competence and religious character in Muara Potan Village.
