Abstract

Al-Shamāʾil al-Muḥammadiyyah is one of the most important sources of Prophetic history. Its popularity is undeniable, spanning from traditional classical discussions to its evolution in the digital age. This interdisciplinary study examines the recent transmission of Shamāʾil content disseminated online, employing the concept of exegetical hadith reception. The research addresses questions such as how videos are produced and reach their audiences, and how Indonesian ʿulamāʾ engage with the complex settings of Shamāʾil while connecting with local viewers. These aspects are analyzed through online observation of Indonesian ʿulamāʾ playlist videos focused on al-Shamāʾil al-Muḥammadiyyah. The findings reveal that these video playlists effectively introduce contemporary Indonesian audiences to the scholarship of the third-century Central Asian ʿālim, Imām al-Tirmidhī. Each playlist offers a unique approach to highlighting the importance of religious authority among diverse audiences. Although social media presentations reflect a fragmented Muslim authority and a varied audience, the assumption that cybermedia inherently reaches a larger audience is questioned.
