Abstract

Thermal comfort is an important factor in the design of a mosque hall used by many congregants for long periods of time. The At-Taqwa Mosque hall of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang is frequently used for various activities, but its thermal condition has never been evaluated. This study aims to evaluate the hall's thermal condition based on parameters of air temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity. The method used is a descriptive quantitative approach. Data collection was carried out by measuring temperature, humidity, and air velocity directly at five points from 06.00–18.00 WIB. Analysis was carried out by comparing the results with thermal comfort standards in humid tropical climates (ASHRAE 55 and SNI 03-6572-2001). The results showed a temperature range of 26.4°C–29,9°C and a relative humidity of 76.8%–88.5%. Wind speed ranged from 0.15–0.5 meters/second. The measurement results showed that the air temperature experienced a gradual increase from an average of 26.4°C in the morning to a peak of 29,9°C during the day. Relative humidity showed a decreasing trend from an initial value of 88.5% to as low as 76.8% and increased towards the afternoon, in line with the increase in temperature. Air velocity increased from 0.15 meters/second to a maximum of 0.5 meters/second at midday. These findings emphasize the importance of planning a strategy for managing air temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity parameters in achieving thermal comfort in a room. Optimization strategies for air circulation and natural ventilation management in closed spaces with passive and active ventilation system designs for tropical public spaces to support comfort, energy efficiency, and environmental health in the context of worship. The conclusion is that the mosque hall has the potential for thermal discomfort, so passive design improvements such as cross ventilation and shading are needed.

Abstract

The console structure is one of the structural systems widely applied in building design and construction, especially to meet the need for column-free space and architectural form expression. The application of the console structure allows building elements to protrude from the main support without direct support underneath, thus providing design flexibility as well as challenges from the structural and construction side. This article aims to examine the console structure in the context of building design and construction, covering the working principles of the structure, its role in the formation of architectural design, and commonly used construction systems. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method through literature studies of textbooks, structural planning standards, and relevant scientific articles. The results of the study indicate that the console structure has an important role in the integration between the structural system and architectural design, but requires careful planning and construction implementation to ensure the safety and performance of the building as well as sustainability. This study is expected to be an initial reference for designers and practitioners in applying the console structure appropriately in buildings.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the thermal conditions of wooden houses, a form of vernacular architecture in Grobogan Regency, based on air temperature, relative humidity, and air velocity parameters. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed, involving direct field measurements at five indoor observation points: four at the room's corners and one at its center. Measurements were taken hourly between 06:00 and 18:00 WIB. The results indicate that air temperature rose from morning to midday, peaking at approximately 34.6°C between 13:00 and 14:00 WIB, before dropping to around 31.1–31.4°C by 18:00 WIB. Relative humidity exhibited a pattern inverse to that of temperature: values ranged from approximately 74.7–78.5% in the morning, fell to about 54.1% at midday, and rose again to approximately 73.4–73.6% in the late afternoon. Meanwhile, air velocity was recorded at 0.0 m/s across all observation points and times, indicating that airflow was below the instruments' detection limit. Overall, the measurements reveal that the most critical thermal conditions occurred during midday, characterized by high air temperatures and air velocities below the instruments' detection thresholds. The findings highlight the importance of managing openings and enhancing natural ventilation, specifically through the implementation of cross-ventilation as strategies to improve air circulation within these wooden houses.
