Abstract

This study aims to provide a theological reinterpretation of Quranic verse (QS.) Al-Baqarah: 168, shifting its focus from a mere jurisprudential (fiqh) guide for personal consumption toward a foundational framework for political ethics and public policy (siyasah syar'iyyah). The primary objective is to redefine the term thayyiban within the context of the national nutritional emergency (stunting) and the strategic efforts to enhance the nation's cognitive intelligence in pursuit of the "Golden Indonesia 2045" vision. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical qualitative method with an interdisciplinary approach—integrating textual studies (Tafsir Al-Azhar), public nutrition science, and economic sociology—this research analyzes the Nutritious Free Meal (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG) Program as a theological mandate for the preservation of life (hifz al-nafs) and the preservation of intellect (hifz al-‘aql). The findings indicate that the thayyiban criteria in the Quran scientifically correlate with the fulfillment of essential animal protein intake, which is critical for brain synapse development. Sociologically, the MBG program serves as an instrument of Islamic social justice aimed at breaking the cycle of structural poverty. Buya Hamka’s interpretation further legitimizes the premise that state authorities are obligated to guarantee the quality of the populace's nutrition. Ultimately, national nutritional failure is not merely a health crisis but a form of neglect toward human dignity within the framework of transformative social theology.

Abstract

Religious Religious moderation (wasathiyyah) has emerged as a critical discourse in responding to the challenges of globalization, religious extremism, and increasing social polarization. Although the concept has deep roots in classical Islamic scholarship, its contemporary interpretation has evolved to address modern social realities. This study aims to analyze the concept of religious moderation from the perspectives of classical and contemporary Muslim scholars, identify their similarities and differences, and examine its relevance to contemporary society. The research employs a qualitative descriptive-comparative approach through library research and qualitative content analysis of classical and contemporary Islamic literature. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify major patterns and conceptual relationships. The findings reveal that both classical and contemporary scholars share the same normative foundations of religious moderation, namely balance (tawazun), justice ('adl), wisdom (hikmah), and public welfare (maslahah). However, classical scholars primarily emphasize moderation as a moral and spiritual principle, while contemporary scholars expand its application to issues of pluralism, democracy, social cohesion, and the prevention of religious extremism. The study further demonstrates that contemporary interpretations of wasathiyyah represent a contextual adaptation rather than a departure from classical Islamic thought. By integrating these two perspectives, this research proposes a comprehensive framework of religious moderation that combines theological authenticity with social relevance. The findings contribute to the development of Islamic studies and provide practical implications for strengthening moderation through education, religious leadership, and public policy in multicultural societies.

Abstract

Quranic interpretation is an essential bridge for understanding divine messages amid the dynamics of humanity. This article aims to examine the urgency and methodological approach in reconstructing Quranic interpretation, focusing on Q.S. An-Nisa '[4]: 11, which literally regulates the 2:1 inheritance distribution between men and women. Using a historical-critical approach and philosophical hermeneutics, this study applies Fazlur Rahman's interpretation model with the “double movement” method and Nasr Hamid Abu Zayd's concept of implicit meaning (dalālat al-maskūt ʿanh). This reconstruction does not aim to remove the authenticity of revelation, but rather to explore the universal principle of the Qur'an, namely justice, which is then reformulated in the context of modern society that upholds gender equality and human rights. The results of the study show that openness to contextual and multidisciplinary readings can enrich the tradition of interpretation and present a transformative and relevant Islam. The reconstruction of interpretation on the issue of inheritance is a strategic step to bridge the divine text with the needs of social justice today.
